HI all
first post and just after some help. I see the exploroz web site is massive so it will take me time to read through it all.
It all started last week when some friends and I were having dinner. The two families had been planning a long service vacation for July 2008 and asked my family if we would like to join. I too have long service up my sleeve.
Our kids are 6, 8 and the other families will make up two boys 10 and another two boys 4 n 9. We all know each other and I think they would get on fine over the 6 weeks.. yeah Ok some details.
I didnt really pay attention as It wasnt really my cup of tea. Im more the
camping 4wd kind. But thinking about it now it would be an amazing experience for my kids and a welcomed break for my wife and I.
Pretty much leave melb, head to
adelaide, port agusta, Alice and
the rock,
Darwin. They seem to think they can then transport the cars back and fly home?. All up around 6weeks. Accommodation would be hotels, caravan parks etc.
The details are in their infancy sure. Im not convinced Id want to drag my Hilux with two kids squeezed in the back over that length. Especially If I wasnt seeing any off road use :)
So I called me older bro who has visions of retiring as a gray nomad.. when the time comes. Great opp to see how it all works I said....hmm we had a brief look at motorhomes of the hire kind. $200ish a day and he was certainly interested in joining us and sharing costs.
This seems smarter, no hauling suitcases in and out of a night and wasting time in that regard. Gives the kids heaps more space while traveling and I think would even out as far as accommodation is concerned.
But I dont "know" these things and would be very appreciative of any thoughts or advice or pointers to go and read

The motorhome is a great way to travel, as long as you don't want to go off road.
The critical thing is that you and your BIL and family must be compatible. Living in that close proximity for 6 weeks is an issue.
There will also be a penalty for a one way hire on the Motor home.
Nightly van
park fees around 20 to 30 dollars or free camps along the way are good.
Make sure there are enough
seat belted approved seats for the whole crew as
well.

thanks notso,
We have been on many a trip 3 weeks possibly the longest with my bro in tow so yes we are used to and recognise those indifferences.
I was more after things like is 6 weeks long enough? would it be too much of a rush
and some stories of campervan living. having never been in one.
What chances are there of free nights? as in $20-30 per
camp fee, how often am I going to be able to find somewhere free or should I include this as a constant in my costing..
