I need to remove the GXL roof bars on a 120 series 2007 Prado to fit a stronger set of rhino cross bars so I can carry an alum. boat..Does anyone have a clue where to start..Are there covers on each end or as someone suggested do they have to be attacked under the head lining???

Toyota dealers supply the Rhino racks... If yours is half reasonable he will supply and fit for the same cost that you can buy the racks off the shelf. (so you can retain your blissful ignorance about fitting them) . I have 3 crossbars fitted ... However make sure you get back the original roof bars as I was told their replacement value is around $900 each, that is if you want to put the vehicle back to standard when you get rid of it..... U will love the truck !

G'day Murranji,
I've just gone the other way and put the rails on my '05 GXL. Its easy to remove the bars. The plastic covers on the ends of the bars slip off and you'll see the 10mm bolts. The centre support pillar has a cover that slips off as well. A small/medium screwdriver will do the job. Each of the covers just need to be eased off. No need to attack them. There is a T shaped fitting inside the centre support that you gain access to when you remove the bars. You will see it all when the covers come off. Keep all the bolts etc as someone will be like me and want to get a pair of rails. and ypo can on sell them.

Cheers

Makes sense.I have the rhino HD cross bars and fittings ex my 100 series [now sold].Just that I was not game to put too much pressure on covers to see what they hid.Bars look great but I am not confident that they might hold a lot of weight with clips that can be bought to fit . Many thanks

I have the ARB full basket rack on mine. You probably wont want the basket however the rails that the basket sits on run full length in one solid piece on both sides and bolt into all three of the mounting points. Distributes the weight very nicely.

Might be worth asking ARB if you can buy just the mounting rails by themselves and this will give you a good solid base to work off to build a customised rack for carrying your boat.

Cheers
