Noticed in latest S/C catalogue, they have a special with a hand winch for $299.00.

Rated to 1600kg, looks a little like a trifor.

Any experiences with this winch?

Which one are they copying?

It might be... then again.... :)

I went through this a couple of years ago and decided that as I could buy a reputable brand (Big Hall) which had a number of experienced recommendations from this forum for $100 more and given that a winch is a lump of useless, heavy and expensive junk... until... the time I _really_ need it.... I preferred to spend the extra $100 for peace of mind.

Thanks,
Thinking the same way Mike.
Havn't had one for a while.
Parts are the other issue, if it gets used enough :o)
If it is the same as the big haul as Kev suggests (from a photo in the catalogue), then again ..................

Oldplodder,

I reckon it looks more like a Big Haul than the Trifor.

Mike,

It is 30% off @ $299.00 which puts it in the same normal price range as the Big Haul ($429.00). So based on the theory of, if it cost more then it must be good then it must be good :)

Cheers Kev

I bought the hand winch and also a tool kit/roll at the same time about 4 weeks ago. The winch cable once used seemed to flatten and became a concern but still works although it has a tendency to slip when winching but it has got me out of the muck so happy regardless. The tool roll is up there with my best buys as from memory $68 and is great for the rear of the truck and has everything I have needed when doing bush repairs. In summary the winch works but for how long I am unsure, spend the extra bucks and go a bighaul.

$300 buys you a second hand genuine Tirfor.
IMO thats a much better buy, because no one uses handwinches - most just pack them away "just in case".

In years to come, you will get sick of carrying the hand winch around and a second hand Tirfor will still be worth $300.

Well said Phil and pleased to see that at least there's one person who knows that the best known, perhaps even iconic hand winch is a Tirfor and NOT a Trifor!!!
