I have a 1992 GQ patrol and have a problem with a wheel wobble at 70kms per hour. The wobble is not invoked every time but when it does the steering wheel is nearly thrown out of my hand. I have done the following
1 Wheel balance
2 Jacked car up and inspected bearings for movement and other steering components under car
3 Check pan arm bushes.
There is no evident wear any where!
Suggestions and advice welcome

Steering dampner. Unbolt it at one end and see if has any slap before the pressue takes up.

Hi Rooster, is it a standard Nissan panhard rod? if so, make sure they are the genuine rubber bushes being used as some aftermarked bushes are not an exact fit. I have had the same problem with running aftermarket panhard rods and using nissan bushes.

Hi
Yes they were genuine, I got some advice from a mechanic to push against the car vigorously moving it from side to side, and observe movement in bushes. None could be seen.

I would have thought the above replies should have been checked at wheel balance
replace the damper , bushes may not be worn but the internals could be RS

I will add that my Troopy had a wheel shake , very violent too afyter straightening up after a slight left beng in the road, that dissapeared after I fitted wider
wheels, so it could have been in the tyre/wheel - split rims

Interestingly I have changed the
wheels, but this was before I discovered the problem. The originals
wheels I took off where Nissan rims sun raisers, I swapped the sun raisers from my other patrol. Neither had the wobble prior to the change.

94 GQ same but at 80. Have found some tyres worse than others,a good on car ballance fixes
mine each time. Also increasing pressure helps. Cheers

Hows it going,
Had it on my patrol too, I think most Patrols get it at some stage.
I found it is usually a combination of things which magnify through other worn components.
With
mine it had it quite bad when it did it, but not always like yours. I replaced my coils, shocks and damper as
mine where still the originals and 150,000 kms old (how old are yours?). After this the wobble reduced by about 90% but still there, then I replaced my tyres which were right down near the wear bars, now the wobble is gone.
So the theory is if one thing is worn and causing movement, it will get worse as the flow on effect through over worn components makes it worse.
It doesn't have to be a steering component to cause a steering wheel wobble. A blown or very worn shockie can cause that wheel to move around more and cause an out of balance issue.
So maybe a good check by a 4WD
suspension shop will help you on the right track.
Cheers Stefan

It is worth a thought, the car has done 200,000. I have noticed a clunk in the front which could be the shocks, something in the strut , normally happens when driving over irregular terrain.
