Reading Oldploders post and replies re : superc--p hand winches has brought up a conundrum that has been on my mind for some time : not realy interested in hanging a electric warn / whatever winch of the front , but what are the pros / cons of a cable vs chain hand winch ? aka tirfor or like [cable] vs mud mauler[chain] , and to throw an extra spanner into the conundrum , pros and cons of a porta winch ? Not $ problems , usage /practability ect.

Simple. He is asking about positives and negatives of chain hand winches versus cable ones. Also he is asking about practical aspect of using hand winch because he does not like to install electrical one. Not he worry much about cost, but rather need winch very occasionally and therefore questioning what the best option would be.

I,m not sure about the chain winch you are talking about, but they say you will try everything else first before getting your hand winch off the roof rack. And as an ex owner I can only concur, especially if the winching is uphill and your over forty. Electric for me.

Don't know what a Porta Winch is but we have had a few threads about the Mud Mauler over the years and I looked at one in some detail a while back. The opinion of (a very few) users was that they are not up to the task in the same way a decent Tirfor type winch is. Having said that; before I bought my Big Haul I used a $50 Black Rat puller to get "unstuck" on one occasion - quite often one only needs to move a few inches to be able to drive out of trouble. I also carry a few lengths of chain and couplings cut to fit around each rear wheel (can't do the fronts - the chain catches on the discs) in the hope they may give me just a little extra grip to get out of mud bogs - haven't had to use them so far.

We don't always need "Top Of The Line" Supa Dupa equipment for everything (one of my gripes with this forum) but if you are going to the expense of buying a winch you may as well get one which you have high confidence will do the job.

If my $98 GMC generator fails it doesn't matter a toss, if my winch fails it probably does.

I have a Mud Mauler chain winch & am very happy with it.
They claim a 4 tonne capacity, whether that is right or wrong I can't tell you.
It is fantastic to carry due to its compactness, it is also easy to use but you must be sure that the chain has no twists in it, although I see they now come with an extra swivel about 450mm from the hook.
I have also never used the supplied ground anchor.
