Aandy(WA)
Well the same old problem is still
well and truly evident. So many people who need guidance on such simple issues. Heaven help them if they get stuck in the bush! Who will tell them if it's time to have a cuppa or blow their nose?? Come on Aussie adventurers - stand on your own two feet - work it out for yourselves. While I'm on here, I'm travelling up into the Alpine areas soon and I'm wondering if anyone has experience in choosing suitable socks. I saw some quite warm looking ones at Target the other day and they were much cheaper than Explorer socks. Do I stay with the tried and proven
Explorers or should I try the cheaper version? I'd be so happy if I could get some advice on this. Also will I need chains or any special additives for my fuel? How thick will the snow be? Will it be cold? Thank you so much in advance!!

Forget the Explorer socks, they're rubbish. You should buy a pair of Zippo Snow Boots with built in Honda footwarmers. They are not cheap, quality never is, but at $1375 what price do you put on the safety of your family and you can't take care of them if you have frostbitten feet, can you? Stop messing around and just spend the cash.

Great advice Mike,
They are the best available on the market, Aandy may have some problems finding them being he is in WA. :(

Hi
Chains must be carried at all times during the snow season, it wasn't compulsury
for 4wd when we were there 5 years ago but advised to carry, most servos around
the Alpine area supply Alpine fuel. At the moment most areas are around 1 metre
deep and very cold, top temps during the day average 4, this is for Vic sites.

Took the words right out of my mouth !!
Maybe he would stand on his own two feet if his tootsies weren't so cold.
What good is a
forum if people don't share knowledge and experiences?

LOL,
Aandy, you forgot to ask what brand of thongs go best in the snow. I've always found a
Billabong thong/Explorer sock combination the best in my extensive snow experience on the NSW Nth coast :-)))

Evacool thongs are far better and easier on your battery than Engel thongs! But Cooper thongs have soft side straps.

If you put the thongs inside the socks, they don't flap about and pick up snow.

If you can find them, 'greasy wool' socks are meant to be good in cold conditions too.

I work with plenty of KIWIS and they all wear the same socks - pity I dont know the brand but they are NZ and pure wool looking hand knitted.
If anyone would know what to wear in cld areas it would be someone from Dunedin - so ask your local South Islander Kiwi
(apparantly being pure wool they are good for mopping up "spills" but maybe thats just a kiwi thing"

Could be the 'Everest' brand. Some people say that you should not wash them as this takes away the natural oils. Don't know how they stop the socks walking off by them selves overnight if they aint been washed, perhaps they chain them up.

I was going to say that the answer to the penultimate question is "about as thick as some on this site" but that would be rude wouldn't it!

Its got nothing to do with socks, its all about those special shoe laces that Truckster keeps talking about.
Apparently they work in all conditions.

Truckster no longer uses shoelaces , the magic of velcro has finally arrived in the nanny state , ,shoe laces have been found to be a workplace health and safety hazzard.

G'day Aandy, just so as I can give som meaningfull advise on socks, do you intend to wear them on your feet?
I'am told snow is only cold on overcast days, as when the sun is shining on it the reflection heats it up and causes it to be warm snow. It's usually overcast in Vic all year around, so you should be right.

Aandy you keep it up mate.
You are a shining
beacon in a land of mediocrity.
Nothing like taking the "mickey " out of those that deserve it.
Keep up the good work.

Maybe it's just the morning fog in my brain, but it looks like some of these replies are actually seriously addressing the questions regarding the snow?
Please tell me it's not true and I'm missing the devilish subtlety of them? Otherwise I believe some may have had their sense of humor surgically removed....
