Dear All,

Congrats on a great forum.

I've got a 93 4runner that I have fitted an LPG tank to. The spare wheel just sits in the boot most of the time, and when I need the room, it goes up on the roof racks.

Has anyone scored a swing arm off a hilux surf (which just bolts onto the rear RHS body) or similar and fitted it to this model 4runner. I wasn't too keen on paying $1500+ for a ARB / Opposite lock etc....

The load on the surf swing arm is actually taken mainly by the rear tailgate/door when it is locked in position, not from the bolts on the body as they are not very strong.

So I am unsure if your tailgate would be able to have the fitting mounted to it as I'm pretty sure that's where the number plate is located on the 93 models (just like the earlier surf's with the tyres underneath). So you may need to either heavily modify your tailgate or get the rear tailgate from a surf as well. It may end up being easier/cheaper to get an aftermarket (I agree ripoff) swing arm.

Thanks for the pics Jeff.

It still may be possible... I'm going to have to have a look at the guts of the tail gate and the mounting positions of the swing arm. It's either going to be that or mounting something from the towbar assembly...

Nothing is straight forward is it!

Having a closer look at Jeff's rearend there seems to be a separate panel that is the same shape and size as the area where the number plate sits in the 4runner. There is also a small hole that has been plugged just to the right of the tailgate fitting... this is where the keyhole is to wind down the rear window on the 4runner. So I may be able to just pilfer a swing arm, the extra panel and the tailgate fitting, rather that getting the whole tailgate.

"Having a closer look at Jeff's rearend "

OMG, I felt like someone was watching me...

Yeah I see what your saying, I just went and had a closer look. That pannel does indeed appear to be made of plastic, however I cannot see how it is attached. There are no screws or bolts that seem visiable. I guess you'd have to try and find one the same colour as your 4runner too, or else paint it.
