What do we expect? Is it another Supacheap? A Rays? I plan on a visit just in case the opening specials are just too good.

Is this the first Anaconda there?

They are like BCF (Boating Camping Fishing) but they have other stuff too. Like bikes and mountain climbing gear etc.

Have the occasional sale which can make things worthwhile. Reasonable range of products.

The sausage sizzle out the front is the best bit!!

Brew,
I was in Melbourne a couple of years ago when Anaconda opened there. I thought it was a real fizzer. Bought nothing. Snowys here in Adelaide have much better gear for what we do.

Cheers

From my experience, if it is not on sale, it is bl@@dy expensive. Apart from looking at their catalogue every now and then, I don't bother with them.
But in our area (Gold Coast) we have a heap of local camping and fishing stores as well as the big guys.

Anaconda is owned by Spotlight. I guess they are tapping into the male market given their position with the women at Spotlight.

Gday Norm and all

Its good to see shops for us....especially when they are near a spotlight etc. Going to shopping centres is usually painful, but when they put a big outdoors type store in the same complex as a spotlight style store its great. Mum goes into her shop, and me and the kids go to the camping/fishing shop. its a win/win in my opinion.

I was in a large store a few months back, son asleep in pram. Crossed paths with another bloke with a kid in pram. A sales bloke aproached at the same time, "can I help you blokes" almost in sterio the both of us, who had never met, come out with " not at the moment thanks, just killing time while the wife is in the scrapbooking shop"......we cracked up.

Cheers Andrew

PS I will add that although I like the range etc in the big camping shops, the service etc is usually pretty bad. After xmas, buying a new swag, the ones I wanted to look at were still on a pallet in the shop. After the normal glances to the staff that were walking around, I got the irits, got out the pocket knife and took it to the pallet, unpacked a few, checked a few out, grabbed the one I wanted, and left a mess of plastic and packageing on the floor. All while staff were nearby, without one offer of assistance.

Norm
Thanks for the advice that they are owned by Spotlight.
I saw the other day that there is one opening in a new development in Geelong soon. The otyher main store being built there is a Spotlight.
I was wondering if there was a relationship between the two.
Cheers

I heard that on the radio this morning. Makes me wonder how these little camping stores are going to cope with all these big ones opening up.
Rays Outdoors have just recently opened up at the Elizabeth shopping centre, I wonder how Salisbury camping world will cope?

Cheers Luke

Having owned a retail store you do have to feel for them as in many cases their houses are on the line. I always try and support the small business if I can

When Ray turned up in SA for the first time, they cut prices to the bone and had a real retail biffo with Snowys - as a result, Snowies have expanded, not shrunk. I know nothing about retailing, but I know which one I'd rather deal with. Cheap sales b#@^&*t gets very wearing, very soon.

Yep I'm with you Darian. Snowys have great staff, know their stuff, and rarely stock cheap junk.

They opened here in Perth last month. Absolutely packed and people were going crazy. Bought a touring tent because they honored a 10% less than a competitors marked price. So was happy.

There is no such thing as a "sale" only retailers selling stuff at the proper price.

Ok here's my verdict. Very similar to Rays with a bit more variety. Prices are not the cheapest however we took advantage of the super specials. Got a single 3 hoop dome swag reduced from $270 to $150. Got the headlamp that was reduced from $49.95 to $15. First 500 people thru the door got free fishing rods so we got two of them lol. Also a gift bag each with cheap promo junk like stubbie holder, travel mug etc....
