Am interested in knowing other peoples views on after market exhaust kits like the "vortez" perfomance exhaust. I have a mate with a 3 lt. patrol ( 2006 model ), he is interested in putting a bigger exhaust and maybe a computer chip in his car. The DP chip, or ( i think ) detronic got his attention and was rated pretty high at a tjm shop the other day. He would like more power for towing and maybe better fuel economy!

Fishaholic,
Both these mods will make a noticeable improvement to performance and the two combined would be the most expensive improvements you could possibly do to a 3.0Di motor. I would strongly suggest that your mate fit a boost gauge if he opens up the exhaust because they are prone to going into excessively high boost and a free flowing exhaust will exacerbate the issue. However if done and set up properly, the improvements are exceptional.
I have a 3” flow through mandrel bent exhaust with a 2 ¾” dump, no mufflers and a Dtronic fitted.

do you own a patrol? and how much power and economy would you think it increased it by. Also does it stop or lessen the "flat spot" of the patrol when taking off. Would you be worried about the longevity of the engine.

Fishaholic,
The flat spot is most likely due to the EGR valve not closing properly, a common issue with the ZD30. I do own a Patrol 3.0Di and have done many mods to its engine to try to improve longevity and durability. My car made 127hp at the wheels before fitting the exhaust, so it’s now most likely around 135hp, standard they make about 95hp.
There is heaps of info on this subject HERE and some of my mods HERE .

Jon.
A mate of mine purchased a detronic from a diesel workshop down near berrima, and he had to turn it back two notches as it was as he puts it "HUGE" tows his boat like it's not there.
Hope this helps.
Ashley.

Although I have 95 series, the TD is the same apart from yours having a shorter and more direct air delivery from the driver's side.

I fitted a Dtronic (yes that is the correct spelling). It provided a marked improvement at the bottom end of rev range. A Dtronic is not adjustable so your mate couildn't have fitted one of those.

Recently fitted a mandrel bend with 3" dump pipe which allows even freer revving from quite low revs. No turbo lag, in fact I wasn't concentrating the other day and let the clutch out before I'd hit the gas and she still took off. It will accelerate under load a lot better. You hear the turbo winding a lot more at low revs.

As an example I did a few tests (I don't drive like this all the time)

Smooth acceleration from 20 KPH in 3rd
Smooth acceleration from 40 kph in 4th
Take off from standing start in 2nd

Fuel economy is around 11.5 L/100 km on a variety of roads and conditions including hills, freeway and town driving.
