Hi
How can i improve power take off in my 2004 manual turbo diesel Prado ?
Its done 200,000 klm and its a slug on take off
I have only owned the car a few months
If i stop half way up my drive way i have to roll back to the bottom and get a run up
And its not all that steep
Is this normal or is there something wrong with it?
Any help on this would be great
Thanks Jon Replies: 9 Last: 14 Jul 07 16:43 FollowUps: 4 Last: 14 Jul 07 14:43

Jon,
You certainly have a problem there.
Could be valve tomming?
Has the cam belt been change recently?
Cheers Faze.

Carby cleaner will do it, but if you aren't confident, get someone to do it for you as they can be quite fragile..
It only takes a few minutes & can make a huge difference.

Sorry, reading down it appears that you don't have one.
Check the turbo.

umm i hate state the obvious to you but before checking the valve timing etc I would first be changing fuel filters etc. You dont sound like you have much mechanical knowledge so a trip to the dealer you bought it from or a mechanic may be in order if the fuel filter doesnt help.
Would probably be very helpful to give more info too. has it always been this way or was it sudden or gradual? smoke, noise etc?

take it in to a serious diesel machanic. Find out what you are up against.
Could be something as simple as incorrect diesel timing. Mad
mine drive like a morris.
Always good to get the injection pump checked anyway on a second hand TD.

Jonboy,
Assuming your vehicle is standard (and doesn't have huge tyres etc) Sounds abnormal.
1Kz-te doesn't have an airflow meter, so you can stop looking for that.
If it were me, I'd do everything I could first, and if no better, take it to a diesel injection
shop to get it sorted. So I'd do all items on the major service - oil, air, oil and fuel filters, and check the valve clearances.
Turbo - should hear the whistle when you accelerate; You can check for boost with a boost gauge. You can also take the intercooler off, and check inside the turbo with a small mirror - just check that all the vanes are intact, and that the turbo rolls freely. I had a problem like yours in 2000 with the same motor, and the dealer's mechanic had dropped some stuff into the air intake and chewed out the turbo.

I would be interested to know what the economy is with your rig as
well.
I have no dramas with power on take in my 05 TD auto but economy is an issue and has been since new. Do you get good or bad economy on the road. It could be linked.

G'day jonboy,
I have a 1kz-te in an '02 Hilux. Had to take the entire intake manifold off and clean out all the crap that had built up, it had nearly half an inch of oily carbon build up on the walls of the intake at around 40,000. This was caused by the crankcase breather (which is fairly low at the back of the rocker cover) seeping oil back into the intake side (via the turbo) which had been mixing with the exhaust gas from the EGR to create this thick oily carbon residue. Could be that your power loss maybe related to the problem I had, a reduced intake manifold volume would certainly do that. Try taking off the charge pipe and having a look down into your intake manifold. If it is chockers with crap take off the intake, clean it out, whack it back together and do what I did, put a catch can in place to arrest the seeping oil from the crankcase breather.
Cheers, Heefers
