Hi Anthony, I have the Toyota Land cruiser repair manual and 2H engine repair manual, just checked in the preheating section and this is what it says, hope it helps,

Load current, remove the glow plug connector,
connect ammeter between glow plug lead wire and one glow plug,
turn the starter to glow position and measure the load current after about 40 seconds,
load current per one glow plug 12V type 7.2 - 9.8A

Anthony
The 8.5v is the standard glow plug, the 6v is a fast heating glow plug (they warm up fast but dont last as long)

i would use the 8.5

Can't tell you what to use.
But the "superglow" system came out in about 1982. Given that your vehicle is 1981, and the engine is 1983, then it could have either system. The superglow has the lower voltage glow plugs because all the power goes through a preheat element first, so there's a substantial voltage drop before the current hits the plugs.
