Hi all,

Newbie here, both to this forum and 4WD'ing. I have a 2005 3.0ltr TD Navara ST-R and am very happy with it on the whole. I'm thinking seriously about fitting a 3" exhaust system and getting her a Dyno tune to maximise engine efficiency and top up the torque a little.
Just after some feedback from those who have done similar or those in the know :) Thanx

Is this a troll????????

3 inch exhaust? OK, good idea!

Dyno tune? won't do a thing, waste of time! infact a dyno place probably wouldn't take yer money!

The 3.0 Navara ZD30 is electronically controlled and the only thing that will get more ponies out of it would be a DTronic or Tunit or similar.

Use the search function and type in DTronic or Tunit

That's not quite right,,,,
I do not want to start a slanging match, but there are differences of oppinion there
My Navara 3.0TD 2003 model had the worst case of the dreaded "Turbo-lag" ever..

Got it dyno tuned, and presto ,,, A different vehicle, altogether,,, Love it and have for over 3 years, since I had it done,, Cost $140

Sorry,,,,, Can't justify the $1500 for add on chip. Mate put the chip in his, and loves it !

By the way, we towed our camper up the Adelaide Hill ( on the freeway ) and sat it on 80km/hr ( 4 th gear ) all the way up, so that says a lot for Dyno Tuning in itself

Cheers

Bucky, did they give you the reasons why it wasn't running well? And what did they do to fix it?

Cheers,

No mate,, would just die most times, when I went to pull away.. Got the big lecture off service manager, when I had a sook about it ,,,( you don't know kow to drive a Deisel )

I said to them at 10k ,, you fix it or I will ,,,, So I did and they lost all my business, and with their know all attitude, stuff them.

1 Dyno tune, and it was like getting into a V8, it "pulls like a bus full of 16 y.o. boys". ( hehehehehe )
Never an issue, and the turbo is away at about 1750 revs,, BEAUTIFUL
Since the dyno tune, I can move up the gears, as low as 2000 revs and she is away.
Dunno what the mechanic in Morwell did, and I don't care, it works and works well. Can they advance the timing on the pump ? ( I don't know, ) Not in my league,,, maybe they got into the chip ,,( I don't know )

Sometimes I wish the economy was up a little more ,, but I get 9.5 - 10 km per lt
A mate recons he gets consistently 11km / lt, but maybe he cannot add properly

Cheers Mate

Thanks Bucky. It sounds like the common ZD30 problem that happens when the air flow meter gets dirty or oiled up. My 3.0 Patrol did the same thing after a trip to Broome through the Pilbara in 2003.

After talking to several mechs about it and reading info on this forum I bought a new MAFS from Nissan and hey presto - - - like a new vehicle.

I don't think anything can be changed on the fuel pump of the 3.0 Patrol/Navara, it is all computer controlled. The only difference between the two is they add an intercooler and variable vaine turbo to the Patrol.

The guys that did the dyno on your bus would more than likely have cleaned the MAFS.

Cheers,

I upped the exhaust, then bought a Dtronic, best move ever, no problems with bottom end torque, great for the beach now and can drive in confidence.

We are in the middle of our 3 month trip, have driven 9,700 kms from perth to cairns, about to do Cape York, and only problem has been water in the fuel filter.

Go for it, best money spent

Sorry about the rev range difference, but in the Simpson, if I kept the revs to just on 1750, in low 2, the truck would just simply pull away, if I needed to give her a tap on the throtle..

Around town I simply change gears at 2000 revs, and I don't have an issue moving with the traffic ... I'm well over the stage of beiing a " rev head ", by 20 plus years, its just too hard on any vehicle...

Cheers

Hey, thanks for your replies everyone. A DTronic may be hard to justify price wise, BUT, what do they do for your fuel economy? The extra low down grunt is definately appealing since most of my off-road driving is on sand around Noosa Nth Shore (Fraser, Moreton etc in the pipeline).

Cheers
