Probably a
well asked question, but here goes anyway.I am new to the off road driving arena and i should add not likely to go into the real outback. My wife and i like to choose a destination and then take every possible off road route to get there. My cruiser has wide white rims and tyres. My question is,do i stick to these big tyres or are the standard rim and tyre just as good????Suggestions please.

Assuming the wide white rims are 15" there are some cheap tyre options available in that size. Also the wider tyre often (not always) gives the car better road holding, braking & ride than the skinny standard rim. Off road the fat tyre has better flotation & gets grip on the side of ruts where as the skinny bites down through mud or snow for greater traction. Either rim size will serve you
well.

The choice is yours. As you suggest that you will not be doing harsh 4wd, then IMHO, I would go for a reasonably priced all terrain type tyre with the rims you have to save on costs. My two bobs worth,

when you say taking offroad
routes when possible, are they mainly just dirt roads, or do you mean hard offroad tracks?
Do you tow?
What model cruiser?
what size are your rims and tires ? 15/16in and are they 6/7/8 inch wide?
Why not just try the tires you have on their now and see how they go, or wearout the tires you have on their now, and see if your happy with their performance before changing anything? Specially if your new to all this. you will get 2049820394230948 opinions and options.

Nah, I reckon they'll get 2049820394230949 opinions.
Having just been to the
flinders ranges and seeing the rocks I don't think I needed the mickey thompson FC-II tyres, the road tread (nearly stuffed) Nexens would have been fine. That said if it were wet it would have been a different story.
I think it is most important to have a good understanding of tyre pressures and then drive to the conditions. it is then easier on the tyres, vehicle and people......
How are ya bruce? When i sent you that sms a little while ago it was actually Robin Miller's vehicle, his is a petrol....
