My standard 16" Nissan steel
wheels are lookin a bit drab and I'm thinking that I would like them to be black.
Do I get them painted or powder coated?
I'm not sure there is a great deal of difference in the cost and I don't really care, but I have no idea which will last longer!
Thanks
Muzz

Hi Muzzgit,
I recently had 5 rims sandblasted and powder coated and it cost me $220 for memory. Black too. I have had rims on other cars that have been powder coated and they last forever. The rims on my trailer and they were rusty inside of 12 months. Mind you the trailer is just a tip jobbie, lives out in the weather all the time and doesn't get washed of polished. So for the bucks I reckon powder coating. Where abouts in
Perth are you?

Thanks for that mate. I'm south, near Cannington/Lynwood/Ferndale
The ally bullbar on the patrol is powder coated in that gunmetal hammertone and I'm wondering if the rims would look good like that too, but the colour would have to match.
Cheers,
MUZZ

You can get the hammertone in a spray can "killrust" , I did the steel sunraisers on the campertrailer ,look damn fine and easy to touch up if and when required ,and as others have pointed out the powdercoat is a lot harder to fix if damaged.

Either or really. I like powder coating but that's just my personal choice. Here are the people that did my work, no affiliation or anything, just happy with the job

Actually, you are far better off painting thing like wheel rims, not powder coating them.
If you get a surface scratched down to the metal, rust will quickly spread under the powder coating and you only find out about it when a chuck of powder coating falls off and then fixing it becomes expensive.
With painting even if you bend the rim and have to hammer it back to shape, you can always touch it up. Again, if it’s powder coated, bending the rim in the fist place can easily break the bond and hammering the rim back to shape will have to be done very carefully but will still probably damage the bonding.
Cheers.

Powder coating is a nice finish, and we (my sons and I) powder coat steel rims for the road cars.
But I paint my 4wd rims for the reason you mention.
I use a spray can and do it myself. That way they are easy to touch up from the stone chips you always get when travelling. Touch them up every few years, usually when the tyres are worn down and about to be replaced. That way I can rip off the valve stem and it doesn't matter if I get paint on the tyres. Doing 3 tyres at the moment.

Might it not be just as cost effective to buy new Sunrayia's.
They're as cheap as chips unless you have wide offsets etc and would save a bit of mucking about methinks,

New sunrayias are round $80 ea last time I went looking , got some from the wreckers at $25 / $30 ea ,therefore the $24 paint job at 1x can undercoat + 1x spray can killrust hammertone , does 3x
wheels with plenty left over.
