Hello,

I am new to this Forum. But I would like someone to point me in the right direction. I am about to get a Jeep Cherokee Ltd.1999. The fomer owner had accidentally forgot to re-oil. Hence I am getting it rather cheaply. I am inclined to swap the motor over, but being a 4.0L 6CYL. I was thinking of using alternative engines that would be economical, Is this a possibility with Jeep?

Also where would be the the best yards around that I could do a direct engine swap over (economical pricing). Preferably let them do the changeover. ENgines that have done atleast less than 60,000Kms.

Appreciate any help..

Cheers.

If its economy you want, the '90s Cherokees also came out with the Italian-built VM 2.5L turbo diesel. 'Spose it would be possible to find one of those from a wreck and fit it. Could be a big job with very different wiring looms to match-up. It's likely the 4.0L petrol and 2.5L diesel ran quiet different gearing, so it might be best to swap the whole engine & transmission, and also check diff ratios.

The Jeeps used VM diesels until the last couple of years when Daimler Benz made a huge blue and got into bed with Chrysler, and then let them use Benz diesels. I think the VMs are honest if not overly powerful performers but I recall when Range Rovers used the VM TD in the late '80s they had a reputation for cracking cylinder heads between the valve seats. Hopefully that was well cured by the late '90s?

It would be cheaper to rebuild the Chrysler 6 with a few more pones, yeah they aren't exactly the most efficient engine around but they are a solid Unit .
