Hi all, we are leaving for GCR in a week and a half's time and was wondering if anyone out there has been over it in the past week or so and able to tell us what the road conditions are at the moment. We will be taking a spare and another tyre without a rim plus puncture kit, was wondering if that would suffice.
We have BFG A/T all round (new).

Cheers

I have towed my van through the GCR without a problem, all you need to do is lower tyre pressures and speed. Then after all one does not want to travell hard as there is so much to see. The road will be rough on the NT side but otherwise its an easy trip. See my rig in pic below. Enjoy it is still one of the great roads left. Hope they never get it sealed.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

It's a good road... Gets a bit stoney on the NT side

Stay below 80 and you shouldn't have any tyre problems

Check out ThreadID: 47394 that I posted a couple of weeks back (sorry don't know how to create a link to it). It should answer for you.

The road condition on the WA side is good. The road has stony sections between Docker river and Giles, but it is OK if you keep your speed down.

Finally for what it's worth make sure you fill up at each fuel stop as on our trip over 9 weeks ago , 2 of the stops were without diesel due the non arrival of the tanker!

Cheers

Hi campin, thanks for the info, in regards to the fuel shortage out there, were you able to get fuel at Laverton, Warburton & Yular? Which ones couldn't you get fuel at?

Thanks

Hi,

My last point to buy fuel was at Leonora, as when I got to Laverton everything had shut for the day. I took my own fuel in jerry cans and didn't buy any till Yulara.

The fuel price out at there is around 50 cents a litre dearer than at Laverton/Yulara, so if you purchased jerry cans for the trip they will pay for themselves.

For memory I think its about 1200km from Laverton to Yulara, but there are a couple of places listed on this website which are worth visiting (I didn't), so allow for 1500km.

You're meant to get an permit to cross aboriginal lands for the trip. You'll need one for both the WA side and NT side.... The WA one can be done online for free.

Cheers, Will.

Also, don't camp at Yulara cause it's bloody awful, plus if you leave to go into Yulara you'll have to pay to get back into the park - $25 for memory.
