I'm back to that stage where the timing belt needs changing, (more Money), Just keep wondering which is best?, chain , belt, or gears. Belts are vulnerable if alignment is not correct, and tensioner bearings can be a worry, chains running in oil seem to be reliable, and when worn you get that warning rattle. Gears to me are the best, but no manufacturer seems to interested in developing a strong lightweight gear that's not noisy and can cope with the modern diesel design. in the timing area that is. Any Thoughts?.

Cheers Axle.

Axle.
Mercedes use a chain and have for almost 100 years, they have never used a belt, as they are the world leaders of design in small diesels that says it all. Eric.

The general Consensus is a good double row chain is the best and will generally outlast the engine, gears can be a PITA, can be hard to set up right and make a bit of noise, thou they are quite durable too, allot of Diesels run gears just not Jap diesels or small diesel engines.

Personally I don’t like the idea of my engine’s life being in the hands of a rubber belt .

that's my view anyway.

Hi Doug,
I actually had the fibre timing gear break a tooth off on a 179 motor in a hd about 1971. When we use to warm these motors up a bit we use to use a alloy timing gear which was a bit noisey but reliable. I am not looking forward to repacing the belts on the Jack and Paj.

Interesting new layout - had a little trouble sorting out the posts - but back to the subject , well I'm biased as the bolts in my timing gear fell off and gears jammed and Nissan brought me a new engine as a result.

Timing belts are a disaster!
They have cost me one engine in the past.
On almost any modern engine a broken belt means a broken, as in, destroyed engine.

Give me a chain any day- it's something I look for in a new car!
Gears work with a side cam, but not overhead cam.

If I had to choose, it would be chains first choice, followed by timing belt and last by a country mile would be gears.

Do a search on Zeus timing gears and you'll soon find that these things break on Land Rover diesel motors. Not sure if timing gears in other vehicles are reliable or not.
