Have you ever thought about take an overland trip through Russia, Mongolia and Europe, like The Long Way Round. This involves putting your 4WD truck in a shipping container and then flying to pick it up before setting off with a group of Exploroz friends.

This is not a promotion of a tag along, it is planning a self drive overland adventure for a small number of Exploroz members.

If this interests you let me know and I will send you some more info.

Not that I am interested.

But we had a customer who has done this twice.
He shipped his landy to Singapore, travelled through china, Russia and had a great time.

He even travelled on the highest road in the world on his last trip & has some great tales to tell.

Peter,
Yes I did post a question on the topic in the Forum about six month ago. From that post I have found an EO member couple that show strong interest in the trip and another EO member that is also interested.

I met them face to face at the recent EO Warraweena trip run by Willem.

The trip looks like April to September 2009, but with planning could be shorter or longer for individuals, depending on the need. The northern winter is a defining fact, some extension to the end could be made if we travel south.

For the expense and effort a minimum of three months travel is advisable. We need to send the vehicles over shipping containers 6-8 weeks prior and not expect their return for another similar period after reaching the destination. Shipping cost for each vehicle with a 6 metre container is likely to be about $5-6k each way.

Food costs and fuel while travelling would be similar to travel in Australia. If you require a high level of accommodation this could become a significant cost. Our intention is to limit accommodation to a minimum.

There is a host of info available on similar trips. If you would like some references to web sites dealing with the subject let me know.

I am looking for a small group of say between three and five vehicles, a cooperative an collaborative effort is required.

A lead time of at least 12 months is required to make preparations and set up the vehicles for the trip.

Any other questions send them along.

Truckster, I don't have an accurate esimate of costs as the trip as route and length are still to be determined. For the shortest trip of say three months I think $25-30k would be required.

Chris,

Had a fellow countryman tell of some of the fun had on a trip like this quite some years ago, 15-20 mebe more. Travelled right across Russia and thought it would be a great thing for a few club members to try. He felt that it wasn't an expensive excercise and worth every cent.
A marvellous story and some extremely beautiful scenery. They were following the Greenstone (Jade) Trail and set-off from Vladivostok and wound-up somewhere near the Black Sea.
The club was/is the Southland Landrover Owners Club.

Good Luck,

Here's an expression of interest. Not available until 2009, but after that anything is possible - have you thought about including China? I have read of an Aussie Couple who landed in Thailand and drove up through Laos and into China, then into Turkey.....

Keep us posted.

Travellers,

It is difficult for me to communicate with you in a confidential manner. If you become members it would be much easier as we can then send personal messages that are just between us.

The other option is to post your email address here, but I understand this may not be acceptable to you.

Chris... I'm not a member yet, so can't send you a msg. However, I am planning that kind of a trip 'sometime in the future', and depending on timing I would be interested. ;-) Would love to stay in touch, and part-take in planning to see how things pan out. We're originally from Norway, and would not mind doing the trip. Need to take my 4wd to Norway/Europe anyways as we're moving to Singapore next year... but more about that later. My email addy is jskogsta @ pogostick.net ... and I'll share my other contact details if you send me an email. Thanks! /Jorgen
