Can anyone tell me the best deals around for surfing the web/ internet using broadband while travelling Australia using a lap top. Most telco's want you to sign up for 1 -2 years, not 6 months.

Only one way to go, Bigpond Wireless

The Modem is cheaper but you need 240v to operate it, an invertor works ok ,
It is fast and reliable, and it should be available in and near all towns on major routes

Apprarantly that modem actually only uses 6 volts DC.

A trip to Jaycar or Dick Smiths should be able to find a DC to DC converter to go from 12v ciggy lighter to 6v DC and then bypass the whole inverter 240v stuff.

Of course if you are already running an inverter for other stuff then now worries but if you are yet to buy the inverter then I would look at going straight to DC.

Avan

I looked into broadband connection for when we going travelling and decided against it.

I have spoken to a few people who have travelled and you get 2 replies:

(a) you need broadband which can be very expensive and you can't get it everywhere you travel, you need to be near a town

or

(b) most caravan parks have pay as you go broadband, some you even get free connection for a specified time. You can get internet connect at most tourist information places and there is always internet cafes or wifi (www.freewifi.com.au).

Don't know if that helps at all or if it was what you were looking for.

For checking weather and sending emails etc, I've found option(b) by far the most appealing, usually around 3 dollars for 15 mins.

Looked into getting mobile internet on the PDA and it was a lot of mucking around to set up and data plans are expensive.

I was surprised even some remote places like Innamincka had an internet booth in the local shop

Go here, enter your search criteria and make your choice....I change ISP's every 6 months or so simply by getting a better deal.
