Is it possible to load detailed outback maps similar to Hema maps onto the Navman N40i? What outback software / Program can I load onto it? Im traveling to
birdsville and
corner country and keen to get some maps loaded. Not sure how to do this. There is pre loaded "whereis.com" maps on it. I also am aware that with GPS units there are city based ie TOM TOM and my unit , and those for outback ie Magellan, Garmin, anyway any thoughts or advise would be welcome. thanks guys

Hi.
My advise is leave your N40 as it is, and use a standard GPS unit with good detailed maps of the regions you are traveling in.
Make sure that GPS and maps are using the same formatand datem.
Adjust lat and long to To ddd, mmmmm as this is quite easy to relate to metres on the ground. If Your maps have a
grid system on your maps this is even better.
Set up your GPS with track up and reading true north, this now looks the same as you map as you look at it.
Set up gps with snail trail and auto wrap.
With this set up the gps will follow you and if you make a mistake you turn around and follow your trail back to a known point.
You do need to mark your position regularly.
Now all you need to do is learn to transfer the gps's position info to your map
Also learn what the figures mean in relation to distance on the ground
Hope this is of use

These type of devices use vector data (line/point/area data) instead of map images. As such i would be surprised if there is any software that is available to upgrade the Navman N series.....i have a N60i and haven't seen anything yet.
Remember that these devices are mainly designed for route guidance, usually via voice, and as such they need certain data in order to function correctly.
The better options include a seperate laptop/pda etc running specialised software eg OziExplorer, with a GPS interfaced, to navigate these areas.

Regrettably the answer is no. To my knowledge you cannot load any type of map onto this type of device unless it is an update of the proprietary data already loaded or another proprietary product issued by the maker, which at this time doesn't exist .
To do what you intended , you need a PDA type GPS system such as the ASUS MYPAL 636, or similar device together with a program like OziExplorer or a laptop setup running OziExplorer.
