Family member has a Suburu outback MY05 with 17" rims and city tyres..currently 215/55 R17 displaying 93H which I believe is the load rating

Wants to get off road but is limited with the existing setup...Ideally needs to change to 16" rims to enable use of a more suitable tyre but without changing the OD (The room in the guards is limited, especially at full lock with the suspension compressed.) From a legal angle I understand the load rating must not be changed...or at least not downwards

I am told the Forrester has 16" rims and so is it that simple to simply use those rims and a suitable tyre?

Comments from those who have made the change or know what / who have would be appreciated

Thanks

Hi Bungarra,

The 2.5lt Outback came with 16" wheels as standard & the 3lt with 17" from MY04 onwards. One of the reasons I went with the 3lt was I didn't like the look of the 16" rims. I think only in the new model release a couple of months ago that all models came with 17".

So there are genuine Outback 16" rims available (but at what price!!!).

Steve..

When I had my MY04 Forester XT and went and did a few of the tracks (Old Strezlecki, Oodnadatta etc..) used D694's tyres on the standard XT 16inch rim. All smiles without any tyre problems for the whole 8000km trip. The same went for the subsequent off road trips afterwards. Actually bought a second set of XT rims so to have a decent road set and a more off road style set for the holiday trips. Want to buy the rims as I sold the subi a few years ago for a 4.2 patrol??

thanks for that I will pass the message on. I assume the wheel studs will be compatible with the MY05 17"? How do we contact you?

17" wheels !! WOW.

These would certainly reduce your options as far as tyres are concerned.

I have a '03 Forester which have 16" wheels standard - I now have a set of 15" wheels which required some use of an angle grinder on the brakes !!.
The advantage is that I use 205/75/15 tyres - a bit better than the 55 profile tyres.

Certainly the Forester 16" wheels is an option providing the brakes are the same size.
