Gregory Gorge

Last week we did a three day trip from Karratha to Gregory Gorge with two nights camping included. We could have and should have stayed a lot longer. We will next time.

We travelled the Pilbara Iron access road ( a private road where you are required to get a free permit to travel from the Karratha Tourist Info Centre). We turned off at the Water Authority road that follows the water pipes to Millstream. From there we found the access track to the Gorge and camping area. Travel time was just over three hours with a lunch stop.

All roads and tracks were in great condition and only a couple of places were truly "4WD only". You would not get a caravan in there without a fair bit of perseverance, but and off road camper or trailer with good clearance would be less difficult.

The Gorge can be seen from many vantage points and you could devote a full day just for exploring the many tracks. You can also reach Dogger Gorge from Gregory Gorge. Millstream is quite close too. Millstream is in a National Park and has fees for camping. Gregory Gorge is outside the park and free.

The camp area is 4.5 Km upstream for the Gorge and has many interlinked waterholes with flowing water. I'm told by locals that these flow all year 'round. There is plenty of shade, a reasonable amount of dead timber suitable for firewood and plenty of flat areas to set up camp by the water.

At this time of the year the water is very cold, although we did observe some brave souls having a swim. There do not appear to be any freshwater fish of catchable size. Daytime temps are currently in the mid to high twenties whilst overnight and can get down close to zero.

Camps are generally 40 to 60 metres apart, giving good privacy and tranquillity.

We thoroughly recommend this area for a vist if you are travelling the inland areas of the Pilbara - although summetime visits are another story.

You can message us if you would like further details.

Cheers,

Russ and Sue

Hi Russ and Sue,

Is a great area, was there only 5 weeks ago at Millstream. Note that fires are not permitted at the Millstream at all - a bit of a bummer as nothing quite like a campfire at night. Not sure when this changed but when there many years ago fire rings were provided so there has been a change of heart at some stage. Are campfires allowed at Gregory George?

We also travelled along to Karijini and it has some fantastic gorges. Well worth the visit while you are close by (well, ~200km is close in that area!)

Have a great trip

Cheers

Captain

G'day Captain.

There were no signs to the contrary and lots of firebeds on the ground, so we assumed (correctly I hope) that fires are permissable (at least during the winter months.)

Cheers,

Russ.

Hi Captain

Technically there are to be no fires all year round in the Pilbara (but we all light them!)...Gregory's isn't actually part of the National Park so no broken rules there.

I hope to find this place myself in the very near future...looks absolutely beautiful in the pics...pity the Tom Price access road is closed to the traffic for the next few months, we'll have to take the long way round from Paraburdoo.

Hope this helps?

G'day Russ,
Could you enlighten me to which map I can find Gregory gorge on.
It sounds like a delightful area to visit while we are seeing the Pilbara area.
This will probably be next year after coming down the GRR.
Have a great day
Cheers

G'day Harry,

It is on the Natmap raster 250k (Auslig) map SF50-06.

GPS coord for the area where the pools and campsites are is 21.551933S 116.967605E.

You can see this area and the tracks around it using Google Earth.

Cheers,

Russ.
