Hi all - need some help. Being mechanically challenged and only just mastered the art of changing my enige oil, I am about to attempt to change the oil in the diffs, transfer case and tranmission.

What I would like to know is:

1. What size socket do I need to undo the filler and drain plugs on the above? and

2. What is the best method to get the oil into the transfercase - due to the restricted space near the filler hole?

Thanks.

Karl

Karl,
14mm for the sump and I think 19 or so for the transfer case.
When I got my 80 series (1st 4x4) I invested in one of the Gregory's manuals. Best $50 spent.
If you take your time and read the books carefully you cannot go wrong.

As far as gettting oil into the transfer case I bought a 'Tom Thumb' oil pump from Autobarn (around $20).

Good luck

Karl,

If you think you are going to be doing this for a number of years, I would invest in a 20l drum pump. I stuffed around with el cheapo oil syringes, 60mm medical syringes, little plastic thingos bought from supercrap auto etc. It ends up making the job twice as dificult and bloody messy.

I bought a McNaught 20l drum pump and the McNaught grease gun with flexible 'hose' and haven't looked back. They have served me well for well over 15 years now and have saved their weight in gold. They're not the cheapest, but seemed to me to be very good quality....and quality lasts.

Now I don't actually mind doing all the oil changes, because I don't get COVERED in oil. Changing the oil filter is another thing and I will let you 'experiment' with the best ways to removed this without too much mess.

Good luck. It does, over the long run save you a heap of $$ which you will be able to use to do some great trips.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Karl,
Robnicko mentioned the Gregory's manual which I haven't seen. Don't get the Max Ellery one,it is hastily put together and full of errors.

The transfer case, gear box and both diff filler and drain plugs are 15/16 socket. A big sucker.
Some oils you buy now in 1 litre bottles have a pull out neck on them to fill with. If you are doing it at home this would be the go.
If its manual be carefull what gearbox oil you put in it as it will start to crunch gears. A standard 75/90 will become crunchy. I use a caltex brand called "Textran". Mobils variant is "Mobil Fluid 424" Either work great.

Always ,and I realy mean ALWAYS, every time ,remove the filler plug before attempting to remove the drain plug on the diffs ect, no freeking point in getting the oil out if you cant replace it because of a seized filler plug.

24mm is the correct size socket for the plugs, but 15/16 is a better fit believe it or not....always undo the filler first, DO NOT put 90 in the 5 speed, castrol VMX-M is a 75/85 oil and most agree the best oil without spending big on full synthetics....the filler plug is not the one up top of 5 speed but the one a few inches up the side...the oil volume is a little under 3 litres i believe...transfer and diffs use lsd oil....buy a 5 litre container and that way, you only need to use one type of oil in all diffs/transfer.hense only one type to take when you go outback... It is dearer, but has friction modifiers in it so is a better quality oil...

Thanks guys for your reply. I have the Gregory's manual but the unfortunate thing with it is that it doesn't give the socket sizes etc - just simply says to remove.

I will be doing this tomorrow and thanks for the tip re the filler plug first.

if you can get a 6 sided socket like the impact drivers all the better (15/16). After you have undone them 1st time you should be right but fair dinkum some might as well be welded on.
when i first got my 80 (see open fillers 1st) I ended up having to take it to a mech to undo the rear filler.
To fill them try a cheopo 5l weed sprayer as it works a treat

A good idea the weed spray. I use one also. WHEN you get the plugs out, replace them with some after market ones as the ones that Toyota use only have half nut size on them
