Replacing the various belts on modern vehicles isn't always an easy job on the side of the road sometimes necessitating other components be remove in order to gain access to the broken belt pulleys.
Years ago I recall seeing a temporary fan belt replacement which was cut to length when required and had a "joiner" thus allowing the belt to be threaded onto the pulleys with no dismantling. As I haven't seen these for years I assume they didn't work
well.
The idea of using ladies tights or stockings has been around for a long time but I've never tried it, has anyone else? Or do people have their own bush remedies for temporary belt replacement?

The Word " and ' quotes are different than the one on the keyboard - they are in the upper 128 ascii character set. Dependant on the ones you use and your word lanugage settings the system will either allow then to work or throw a woobly. Now the Topic line does not pass through the same output filters as the body becuase the body does all sorts of functions to make link and image imapge processing work.
I know this does not help but it is the reason. I will edit the title for you however just be careful with Word cut & pastes when there are " and ' - it mainly effects the ones that point in to the quoted statement (if you know what I mean).

Mike, I think any vee belt supplier would have them, I have some of it, but
mine is held together with like a stepped pin, but fully adjustable & able to be fitted in situ in an emergency.

We use these on ships to drive external cooling pumps on air compressors. Works
well and is easily adjustable

Hi Mike,
never tried the tights my self but when I was a little tacker we were flagged down and the guy asked for me mums tights as his fan belt had snapped. seemed to work but were talking EH, EK days. Trouble is now, there are so many pullies to go around, I'd need a taller wife.

I lost a fan belt on an EB falcon years ago. My old man came to the rescue with a pair of stockings. Once fitted I think I travelled at least 200m before they could no longer be used for dinner (or as a belt in a car for that matter).
These days I keep the set of belts I took out at last service, although ideally I'd carry all new ones. When I get to replacing my hoses (on the to-do list, but it's a long list) I'll carry the spares of them too. The belts especially don't take up much space and tuck neatly into one of the side pockets in the back of the 'Cruiser.
Having replaced the belts myself the first time, I know I can replace all of them in around 15 minutes and I know there are no other component removal requirements. Knowing I carry them with me means that even if I'm around town I won't get stuck with my car 5kms from home late at night when I can't find replacements.

I was more referring to their use dressing up if one was going out for dinner.
However, if you were inclined to eat them, even sauce and salt could not have saved these ones. :)

I did a fan belt in the cold in
Melbourne on Friday.
Not really sure why - they were only 30ks old, but I can say that I can't imagine stockings really providing sufficient strength and friction to really work effectively, if at all.
Carrying spare belts seems like the obvious solution...

Blackwoods, Macphersons and engineering suppliers carry a range of "LinkBelt" in differing configurations for different pulley profiles. Handy, I have some I carry when I'm in the outback where there is limited availability to "Road side assistance"
As to the tights,
well I confess to spending most of my misspent youth trying to get girls tights off, however my intentions were far more evil than useing them as fan belts.....I just wanted the tights OFF
Sybil dosen't wear tights, she is into stockings with suspender belts and these do not have the strength to take the torque of the Jack's engine.

I actually tried to buy a suspended belt a few weeks ago (never you mind! :) - damn near impossible! None of the usual female undergarment
places stock them but we have a large factory outlet in the south of
Melbourne and I finally located a few there - "Ha! none of the
young girls today would know how to wear them" the very pleasant middle age Italian lady who served me said :)

I understand Mike, for your own use....Sybil has to buy hers form an "adult"
shop....just this morning when I was changing after a swim in the local heated pool a mate asked how long I had been wearing a G string, of course the answer is since Sybil found a Gstring in the car....

Gday Mike,
Wouldn't trust a set of tights, stockings, knickers, suspenders or a bra. I'm guessing all the lumberjacks with chainsaws would carry them though :-))))))
I change
mine every 100,000k (the fanbelts that is) To me they're a maintenance item. New ones go on the vehicle, and old ones into the spares. Have had too many problems with aftermarket belts (noise, slipping, breaks) I only use the genuine belts.
Cheers
Phil

That's my go also, Phil. I once did a fan belt on a HJ60 in
Brisbane on a freezing Sat night. Tried stockings as I had a pair in the spares for the occasion. Didn't work at all. I was in a most "uncelubrious" part of town. Had to lock the doors while looking over my shoulder. No toolbox with me, finally found a garage where the guy not only allowed me to drive inside the workshop, but also lent me some tools. Took me many goes to replace the belt, as I didn't have a manual with me either.
Lessons learned.
Stay out of
Brisbane on Sat nights !
Stockings don't work.
Carry toold and a manual
Always carry a jacket/jumper as part of your toolkit !

Maybe the fishnets would be better - gotta carry the right stuff for the occasion;-))
I also learned a lesson with a 61series. The aftermarket belts that were listed looked perfect, but when fitting them, they were a touch too small to go over the 3rd pulley, Ended up taking them back for a refund and buying genuine, which went straight on. Had a similar hassle with the radiator hoses - top hose for a HJ61 is an inch longer than the HJ60 - aftermarket people don't know that, so they sell one hose that can be doctored on, but I wouldn't trust it.

Well the
young lady with me at the time didn't wear any...fishnet stockings I meant.
Yes, replaced the belt for a round Oz trip. Local garage did it and the belt wasnt the right one. In the Kimberly I could do 80K with a/c on or 100K with it off. Was a slow, hot time into
Derby. (the quarter vents blew super heated air up my nostrils)They replaced the belt with the correct one in 5 mts. Of course that was before they all adjusted for mining prices !!

Reminds me of Dec 1977, with that Corolla (no aircond). Crossed the Nullabor when it was +40degrees. The temp gauge would slide up, so we turned the heater on to keep the motor cool. Passenger had to hang his feet out the window so they wouldn't burn :-)) We were resiliant back then!

Mike,
Years ago (~30) I was up near William Ck and the fan pulley on my S3 Landrover broke. I used a set of my then companion's (F) tights to link the
water pump and crank pulley. 2 pairs worked
well enough to get me slowly the 40ks, with 3 stops to cool down, to the William Ck pub. Got it fixed at Anna Ck station the next day by a mechanic who just happened to be at the pub that night. How he could see straight the next day I don't know but sure did a great job.

Hey Mike,
Remember the 'tights'
well - in our day - obviously your and my time frame - biggest obstacle was the explanation as to WHY?
Used in my Morris Oxford van, Hillman Imp and the old man's Vauxhall Cresta.
always worked - not for repairs but.........................................

Hi Mike
About 20 years ago I used to go up to Merrimbula for the Jazz festival, I normally went up with my brother's mother and sister inlaw, anyway we were coming back and just near Stratford the fan belt in the car I was in snapped, and we got out - and had a look under the bonnet and I said "your fan belt has snapped have you got a pair of pantihose". My companions looked at me in a kind of silly way and asked "why" I said "coz I can fix that belt then and that'll get us to the next town." They didn't trust me, and my brother's mother inlaw later told me she thought I was going to put the 'hose on and flag down a logging truck...!!!
Anyway, the pantihose did the trick and we limped into Stratford and got the belt fixed, and the mechanic was very impressed that "a
young sheila" knew what to do...lol...
cheers
Lyn

The detachable/adjustable belts look good as V-belt replacements. Is there an equivalent for the multi-rib serpentine belts now so common?
