Evening all,
Here is my drama. I have a 80 series that is having problems starting. First I thought it was the starting battery, got it checked and replaced it with the near new aux battery(n70 660cca). Checked this battery with hydrometer and all is good. Put Deep cycle 120a/h battery in as aux. Still having drama's starting car. Once glow plugs are on and the light has extinguished you try and turn her over and get nothing. Sometimes try again and it starts, sometimes a third time. I have a voltage readed in cab for both battery's and the start battery is dropping down when the glow plugs go on, so there is definitely voltage there. Been to two auto sparky's and they both reckon that its a crook solenoid and the new battery is stealing charge. Had the battery charger on the starting battery for 5 hours today and checked after an hour with hydrometer and all was good. But still wouldn't start??? What the. Starter motor? Something in between? Any ideas? Anyone? Please help, about to go bald.
Thanks in advance
Matt

Matt,
While I could never lay claim to being knowledgeable about electrics, this sounds a bit like starter motor trouble I experienced in the past albeit in a different vehicle. If you get the starter motor checked then at least you've eliminated that as an issue.

>>Once glow plugs are on and the light has extinguished you try and turn her over and get nothing.>>
So when you say nothing. .. do you mean that it dont turn the motor over. .. .or . . ..does it just go . . .click when you turn the key to the start position?
>> Sometimes try again and it starts, sometimes a third time.>>
This answers yoyur own question. . . .if it dont start the first time. .then starts the second or third time it wont be the battery.
It will be the solinoid in the starter motor. . .very common on the diesel motors, a auto elect can replace the solinoid without overhauling the starter but if it has done more than 150000k an overhaul would be your best idea

Sounds like the contacts in the solenoid.
The solenoids are a serviceable unit and if you have any mechanical know how they are not real hard to fix.
I picked up parts up at a auto electrician for about 20/30 dollars.

Matt.......as per previous replies......nearly reckon....it a "starter motor problem"...I had this exact problem.....in a "Mack Truck" in short the "starter motor was "polarising" (shorting out) taking all the current and It would not turn over...could also be soleinoid problem....Best of luck......Harro.

Yep, as said solenoid contacts need replacing.
I did
mine on my 80 series & have never had the problem since.
Do it yourself & it will cost next to nothing.

Poling is caused by wear of the front sintered bush on the starter moter. This causes the rotor to come in contact with the field windings formers thus shorting out the motor. Usually solved by replacing the bush and brushes etc.

Matt,
Just had
mine go this morning. Initially would have nothing when turned key, turn off, then retry and she'd kick over. Today, couldn't get it to turn over at all. Couple of taps on the starter and she turned over. Just needed new contacts, $140 later, all good. Beats buying a new one.

Hi. Although my 80 series is a petrol I had a simular symtoms. The trouble was the contacts in the soliniod switch of the starter motor. Get these replaced and all went
well. I also have a good battery sitting in the shed.

To help with the process of elimination, turn on headlights ,and try and start with them on, and see if theygo dull or stay
bright.
If they stay
bright then its not a voltage issue and vice versa

My starter solenoid started playing up at
Cameron Corner. Done 100,000 Kms but lots of starts. Common problem with the 1HZ.
Had it fixed up back at home with bigger contacts fitted by the auto electrician. Had the whole starter motor checked out at the same time.
