I have natmaps and hemma map dvd and thought that since I am joining I might as well spend the dollars and get membership for free (well that's my excuse and SWMBO is 400 ks away so if I order it now it will turn up when I am home next week)

Question is Ozie or Trackranger (not game to spend too much)

I'd vote Ozie, but I'm biased :)))

Hello - OziExplorer is significantly cheaper - so based on that fact alone it suits your main requirement. OE, from what I can gather has a larger group of users so getting advice and exchanging data will be, theoretically, easier (eg data available from plot swap on exploroz website). You can also try before you buy with OziExplorer (free demo/trial download), whereas Trackranger guys do not provide this option. Both programs will probably do what you want though you dont actually state your intended purpose (both do basic stuff like display maps, show position and record tracks and waypoints). I have never used Trackranger so can not comment on its functions but if OziExplorer will not do what you want you must have very specialised requirements (assuming Trackranger has some useful function that OE doesnt..and its worth the extra $).

Cheers

I will agree with this.
I have Oziexplorer and Ozi for pocket PC

A couple of years ago I was going to Europe and was looking for some maps.

I eventually got sent a full set of maps of england, scotland and ireland by a guy in Denmark. He had scanned them in by the looks.

I initially thought it was a con but it wasn't.

They proved very useful.

I have also got Copilot 6 which is better for around the streets. I can run both these at the sane time. I often leave it on Ozi but still hear voice directions from CP.
Ozi maps are often better than CP.

Oziexplorer is far and away the most popular, so people can give you a hand to get started. The guy who writes the software is an aussie, is very helpful and answers his emails. Upgrades are free. I've used Ozi for about 4 years, and still haven't learned all its features.

I started from scratch with Ozie and although I found it a bit hard going due to my lack of both computer and mapping skills I can now only agree with all the above comments. Help was very readily available especially from many contributors to this forum. Ozie has so many features that I am still discovering... I even use it with the GPS tracking in my hot air balloon.

Hi I have both and I use Ozi more and like it more but that maybe because I got it first!

Both will do a good job and I see ExploreOz are now selling TrackRanger software on this site

Cheers
