went to the telstra shop today, the guy i seen was useless. don't know how he draws breath. i went in to ask a few simple questions as my cdma contract is about to finish, if this is who our generation has to rely on for the future, god help us.
maybe some one here can help. i have a kyocera koi with car kit that has auto answer, voice dial, direct aerial and car kit + other stuff i don't use. all i want is a next g with the same. it seems to be an impossible task.
any input welcome please.

And you wont get any of that with the current NextG phones............

Best option is the LG TU550 - but wont give you everything you want

My suggestion is to stick with your CDMA contract on a month to month basis until they can actually give us some decent coverage on NEXT G. So far my impressions are that it is absolute cr@p.

NextG coverage now exceeds CDMA in all locations travel for work. Have Telstra 252 car kit and Nokia car kit side-by-side both on same external aerial and NextG probably 20% more coverage. At national conference last month all agreed NextG coverage now exceeded CDMA. NextG has 200km range towers in some 52 locations presently and more going in.

Brew where do you get your impressions from as they are not the general accepted views?

Beg to differ SARocks - i'm in the industry and have seen FAR too many issues with NextG - BUT Not all Telstra's Fault

1) Many coverage issues related to poor handset design - manufacturers fault, not Telstra
2) Many issues with "rouge" TV mast head amps causing overlaod on NextG Cells - for example one MHA in our region was 18db ABOVE the NextG Carrier!!! (For those who understand!) - not Telstra's fault
3) Many sites have been found to have intermod distortion issues of the CDMA & NextG signals when sharing the same antenna's - Antenna manufacturers issue, not Telstras

Still there is a way to go and Telstra are proactively trying to resolve the issues:
a) Talking to handset manufacturers to get them to improve RF deisgn of handsets
b) Employing staff to track down rouge transmissions and paying for them to be fixed - basically paying for stuff that is not theirs - pretty good i say!
c) Replacing antennas on intermod affected sites

All in all, with the BIGGEST nationwide rollout of a network in such a short time problems shoudl have been expected - and for us SA users - how many months after launch did we get CDMA??? Quite a few - by which time many issues that CDMA had a at launch ahd been resolved. We where just unfortunate with NextG that the whole country got to see the issues with a new network first hand!

and for the record - i'm not happy with my NextG handset performance either - but I know whay it is the way it is and am prepared to wait for the issues to be fixed. In the meantime it works GREAT in the car kit with external antenna!

Cheers

I know it is only one place but..... We were recently at King Ash Bay (near Borroloola, NT). Our CDMA worked fine, though normally only one bar. The dozens of people there with Next G phones were very angry. No coverage at all. Nearest they could get coverage was 40KM odd away.

Although this is a remote spot, there are about 20 permanant residents and during the winter the population goes up to between 100 and 200 at times. That's a lot of phones.

We are going back there next year. Hope they have coverage by then as we'd like to get a turbo modem for the laptop for e-mail and some internet. Not much point with no comms.

I had a problem with a kyocera from telstra and got no support from them. I went with Optus and dumped the copper wire and gave my business to my internet provider who are cheaper and always have been helpful. Telstra kept calling to get my business back but too late now. Bigpond sold the daughter an internet plan that is more expensive than my plan which is faster. I could not reccomend Telstra to anyone. I also found the staff dont know what they are talking about and they promised me a free phone to replace the cdma but reneged. A friend also is having problems getting a new phone fixed. All I read about 3G is bad. My mate got a free 3G from his son and reckons it is useless. He gets better coverage from the ordinary network.

Try Telstra online or even phone help.
When they rang recently with their occasional call about how your phone account is going and how can they save you money, I mentioned that the wife had a CDMA phone. He said Telstra had good deals for people needing to upgrade. But you needed the phone to be on a Telstra account, so I didn't pursue it as my wife's phone is a prepaid.

Don't worry about the other crap, just a next G phone , I have one , had big debates about external this and external that, I seem to have no problems, My gps talks to it, it talks to the gps , and they both talk to the car radios , Next G is getting beter as each week goes by, you won't need antenna's , just get your self a bluetooth hands free kit and you'll be cool .

Well well doesnt a phone company understand people talk. I was a way when I got my disconnection letter for my cdma phone from Telstra. No date on the letter by the way. Rang up on the Monday after the Friday cut off and they said bad luck mate. What do I do for a phone, they said go buy one. I asked about the deals they were offering last year and he said we don't have to now as we are cutting the network off soon, meaning you will have to buy one and we have persuaded enough people to leave so we have the power.
It is not how we treat people when we want something from them but rather how we treat them when they are in need.
Guess who I won't be buying a phone or contract from.
