Hi Everybody,
This is my first post here. I’ll introduce myself.
My Name’s Jon. Nick name “Hairs” Call me anything but late for dinner or a beer.
41, Married, 3 young billy lids. Enjoy the odd beer or three. Second love of my life after my family is my 91 80 series TD GXL.
Not a great deal of extra fruit on the old girl yet. Owned her for about 2 years now. We do try and get away into the hills around the Lawrence and Clarence valley NSW area when ever we can. I’m a chippie by trade and we drag a few horses around.
I have a question to throw out there.
I’ve searched the threads for an answer to my problem and found no solution to my problem.
About 8 months ago I noticed a slight rattle in the sub tank. I took the float out and had a look in there.
To my surprise I found the baffle that runs east-west had come loose. I inquired around for a solution, bar taking out the tank and replacing it, Don’t have the cash to replace it at the moment,  The only solution I came up with was to drop ½ dozen magnets in and push it to the back as far as possible.
This worked for about 7 month until I filled the tank. I guess the weight of all the diesel has moved it again.
I remember seeing somewhere a baffle that was placed in a tank and it would expand to fill the tank.
Has anybody heard of one of these type of things or is it just wishful thinking. Can I get away without taking the tank out and replacing it?.
Or is there another way around it?.
I would appreciate any advice that’s going. Thanks Guys

Look on ebay, there are plenty of old sub tanks for $10-$50. There is also a 170 litre replacement sub tank there aswell...but you need to put the spare on the rear bar to fit one of them....

Thanks for for the quick reply Andrew,
A rear wheel carrier is one of the things on my wish list along with the 170 litre replacment tank. I had a feeling that there wouldn't be much I could do about it.
If I keep the diesel level down real low it doesn't seem to move about as much.
I do keep an eye on Ebay, Trading post and the likes. Frieght is the big killer there.
I had the front left hand side wheel bearing let go just after I bought her. So every little noise starts to freak me out now, and it is anouying
Thanks again Andrew for your reply.

Hi Big Mike,
There is a club in Grafton that might be able to help with where to go and what to see around the valley.
GRAFTON & DISTRICTS 4WD CLUB
Email: grafton4wd@bigpond.com
Website: www.geocities.com/gd4wdc
A young fella that works at Calstar bearings of Grafton, I think he is the Sectary of the club. Sorry i don't remeber is name.
Calstar Bearings
28 Queen St Grafton NSW 2460
ph: (02) 6642 2666
Give them a ring, I'm sure they'll be able to help.
There is a lot of country around here to see. And most of the tracks are pretty good fun. Between Wooli and Broomshed in the Candole State Forrest there is a hole that you would loose a D9 in, I've never been game enough to go anywhere near it by myself.
Get in contact with the club and they'll piont you in the right direction.

I had the same prob but in the main tank, the baffle would also jam up the fuel level sender, fixed it a few times, then just had to rip the baffle out.

G'day udm,
Mines doing the same, jamming up against the sender.
Not sure if I can get it out through the sender hole, or the filler hole, might be a bit too big to pull it out through there. I'll have another look on the weekend.
Cheers

Hi Guys,
Thanks for everybody's thoughts.
Had another look today and this is what I've come up with.
Can't extract it out either the filler hole or the float sender hole. So I Had a cold stubbie and thought about it.
I've pushed it over to the left side and placed 1/2 dozen strong magnets next to it. Made sure it did not fowl the pick up. Then I had another beer and wrote a letter to Santa Clause asking him to bring me a rear wheel carrier and 170 litre tank for Xmas, I told him what a good boy I have been. Here's to hoping. :-)

Hi Hairs

I am surprised it is the sub tank as it is normally the main under the back seat, I just got a good set of tin snips and cut it up into smaller bits and pull them out. In the end it is the only way to stop it from catching the sender.

Have fun

Hi Craig,
Yeah a lot of people have asked if it's the main Tank or the sub. It's the one above the spare wheel at the back. I've spoken to a couple of guys that have gone to the cape a few times and they have never heard of the sub tank baffle letting go, but have heard of the main tank one coming free. I guess I'm just lucky. They fixed theirs the same way you had, by cutting it up into little pieces and removing it that way.
Hopefully what I've done will keep it quiet for awhile.
I went for a drive up Tullymorgan road yesterday arvo and it seems to of held in place. Then again it's only got a 1/4 tank of juice in it.
Might be a different story with the tank full of diesel. The majority of tanks I come across for sale are from petrol's where they have fitted Gas.
I'll just have wait and see if Santa believes me about being a good boy ;-)
It's less than 6 months to wait.
