Hi,
We just purchased a lovely 2002 Patrol TI 4800. Wow, what a lovely vehicle.
However it doesn’t have a spare wheel cover. Somebody has told me the spare tire will deteriorate if not covered. Is this true, or simply a ploy to sell covers? I’m not keen on the soft vinyl covers, so I’d rather leave it open……… better still, I’ve seen some Patrol’s with covers made from a hard-casing. Where can I get one these? We are running Bridgestone Duelers 275 70 R16.

So, are you going to buy covers to put on the other four
wheels? Didn't think so, yet they are going to cop the same amount of sun, rain and God knows what as the tyre on the back (or underneath). So why aren't you worried about them?
I have a wheel cover but for no other reason than it looks good. That's it. $70.00 for a bit of window dressing. In hindsight I probably shouldn't have bothered.
It's your call, but one thing you can disregard is "premature death" if you don't cover it.
Cheers,
Russ.

ditto with Russ.all your
wheels (tyres)are in the outdoors....the only reason i could see tyres dying from the weather was if they were sitting flat for years.......just a ploy me thinks....get a soft cover if it hasn't got a drain hole ...hardware store eyelet kit $5.00....plane cover orrrrrrrr...get one that promotes our great site.....looks good ...and attracts waves and the odd gathering of like minded people...

Spare should be rotated with the others on a regular basis anyway.

Quite right! Every time I rotate the
wheels I always turn the spare by 90 degrees.

Mine are 6 stud so I can only 60 degrees LOL
Buy ***** tyres and your spare will never stay on the back long enough to go bad. (***** insert name of most hated brand)

The truth is that sunlight will deteriorate that tyre over time.
The tyres stored underneath copping mud etc are much more likely to be usable when you need it as a spare.
Tyre life is generallt recognised to be best used within 5 years of the date of manufacture, so if I where you I would be covering up.
Many blow outs occur due to a spare being fitte after years of sitting in the sun on the back of a vehicle.
all the best
Steve

Hi Perthburts
our spare is fine with no cover.
dad had a soft cover on his spare tyre......rotted it to pieces and it was only after a few yrs and it was kept in the garage.
Would love to get an Exploroz one but after seeing what happened to dads i dont wanna take the risk on tyres that break the bank.

I might add that Dads 4b managers to do about 10,000km per year. its a '91 pajero and has only just clicked over 190,000. Only came out of the garage for mum to go to work - 7km away and to go to town and do the shopping once a fortnight - 9km away.
He had no need to rotate tyres.

If you rotate your tyres regularily including the spare then that is unlikely. I don't use my spare wheel cover anymore as it fils with too much crud when we go off road.

Tyre manufactures only recomend about a 6 year life for a tyre anyway.
The only advantage that I see in a cover is it may hide an expensive brand new tyre from some thieving ****'s eye sight.

I cover my spare tyre with my shirt. My wife tells me it looks a disgrace if left unvovered. She also says it's a waste of money keeping it inflated. Cheers, Barry

If you leave a tyre long enough on the back uncovered, it will deteriorate. A friend of
mine bought a car where the the top part of the spare tyre had huge cracks in it from the sun. Although I imagine that this tyre had been sitting there for years. If you rotate your tyres regularly you shouldn't have any problems. Otherwise buy a cover.

Hi,
Take on look on ebay, not sure if this link will work: Spare Wheel Cover and if that doesn't work go to ebay and look up item 190131020331, this or something similar might be what you need.
I am sure you can also get one from Nissan but it might cost more than these.
