I have been given somewhat confusing info re the ability to successfully travel down the
Hay and onto
Birdsville towing a
Kimberley Camper with my Turbo Diesel 100 series L/Cruiser. I have towed it in some pretty challenging spots inc sandhills in the
Tirari Desert. If you have done this recently I would like to know please.

Easiest direction will be from the south. From beachcomber oil
well, you'll travel the
shotline - should be straightforward. Then between the shot line and camp16, you need to cross a number of dunes. Last year there were lips on the tops of the dunes so you'd have to choose where you cross them. Not sure how much soft stuff is on top at present. North of
camp 16 is straightforward.
We also did it from the north in 2005. One of our group had a TVan behind a factory TD Troopie, and climbed the dunes OK. But the sand was fairly damp at the time. His TVan may have been a bit lighter than the
Kimberley, but he had no issues.
Cheers
Phil

Rob
Travelled the
Hay north to south in 2006. Agree with what Phil stated, you may have a fair bit of trouble getting over the dunes at the southern end. There has been a lot of traffic on the
Hay this year so this could make a difference.
Would recommend south to north if towing.
Pete.

Tour leader Jol Fleming (www.direct4wd.com.au) has been out in that general region in the last week or so I think - when he gets back he mighty give you the good oil on the phone (he takes his trailer on every trip that he leads). Jol does have a close cooperative working arrangement with the land owners out that way as
well.

Ron,
Had our Aussieswag on
Hay river this June passed no real probs.Coupla soft dunes north of shot line as said. As you would know dump air all round & you should be right.
Desert was full of vegetation after rain earlier in year with bird life aplenty - literally millions of Budgies.
Hay river was awesome with diverse landscapes.
Our tow vehicle was 2004 Nissan td6 used approx 170 litres -
Birdsville to Jervois including side trips [approx. 700kms].
p.s don't forget to ask Lindsay to take you out to Goyder's Pillar at sunset if staying @
Batton Hill camp.
Enjoy
regards Mark!MPG:16!
