Hi all
Just wondering if anyone has experience using their turbo diesel Hilux to tow a Kimberley Kamper and if so does it cope ok ??? Looking at buying both of these and notice the Hilux tows 2.25t, I'm not quite sure what the weight of a KK is, but am I right in assuming it should be way under that ??
Thanks

Coll, you won't have a problem. I suspect the KK is around 1,200 KG 'dry'. Fully loaded it should not go over 1,500 KG.

I have an '05 Hilux TD. We tow an Odyssey off road CT www.australianoffroadcampers.com.au/
It weighs about what I quoted above (1,500 KG fully (and I mean fully) loaded.
Hilux hardly knows it is there.

But when we added the rest of our load (boat, motor, elec motor, fold up trailer, 2 fridges, food, heaps of camping gear, etc, etc) Hilux knew it was working.

We added Firestone airbags to rear suspension, a Diesel Power chip and a 2.75 inch exhaust. Now we handle the load without difficulty.

For a CT and a load carried by 'normal' people, the Hilux will be fine.

Thanks for the info Norm, just what I wanted to hear. I took one for a test drive today and to say I was amazed at the power would be an understatement !!! What sort of increase in power and torque did you get from re-chipping it ?? And how is the OME suspension you put on ??
Thanks

Coll, there is a copy of the before v after chip dyno in my rig profile. Peak power went up just over 20%. Very noticable. Torque also increased, but it is not as clear by how much. Guy who did the dyno said that his equipment (and that used by most others) can not accurately measure torque. The dyno graph should be used as an indication only; so he says. He even changes the scale on the graph so you can not interpret as NM or anyother torque measurement.

OME suspension has been good. After a trip to Kimberley, GRR, Mitchell Plateau, Cape Leveque etc (ie lots of rough roads), I noticed that the front had dropped a bit. Took it back to ARB, who confirmed that I had lost about 15 to 20 mm of my lift. They replaced the front springs under warranty. Other than that, no problem. The rear air bags keep us nice and level, even when fully loaded and with CT (up to 225KG of ball weight) attached.

coll i do tow a 2004 KK mariner classic fully loaded with the 3.7 m boat on top at say 1600 kgs full load with a 2004 3.0 L TD nissan patrol with a dtronic and a front arb air locker - we have done the cape twice, plus strady, moreton, fraser and carnovon and never been bogged to any significant extent but you do have to pick your line sometimes and maybe use the chicken track at times ie around gunshot etc
IMHO a modern 3.0 L TD will tow a fully loaded KK ok but obviously a 4.2 L TD is better
see you greg

Check whats the tow ball weight with and without water. I've been told it's about 250 kgs, make sure your have a REAL towbar ( Hayman Rreece or similar ) and not just a flatbar tongue.Just last week I saw a Hilux bend like a banana , not sure exactly what happened yet, he had air bags on the rear.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate!

This was how it was in Port Augusta two days ago.

The Troppy and its own CT is 5t fully loaded and it had no problem towing the pair of them.

If you still feel unsure, hire one for a week or two and test it for youself.

If you are in Melbourne there is a place that hires them out.
