No need to say sorry

Evening all,

Am I the only one who has noticed that a lot people lately feel the need to apologise for not finding what they were looking for in a search?

Is it because some peoples standard response these days is "do a search"

I personally don't care if the same question is asked often as market trends, product quality or public opinion is a ever changing thing and the question asked today MAY not get the same responses it did Aug 2005.

So PLEASE stop saying sorry for asking, as it is a public forum, for you will find for every nitwit that says "do a search", you will get 10 that can and will help.

Cheers Stefan

I saw one earlier today but I don't think that constitutes "a lot".

>I personally don't care if the same question is asked often

Then again... I don't think you answer a lot of them, do you?

>as market trends, product quality or public opinion is a ever
>changing thing and the question asked today MAY not get
>the same responses it did Aug 2005.

Trouble is something like "which battery should I buy" is not asked only at the two year intervals you suggest but rather more frequently and I doubt battery technology has changed significantly in the past few days.

Those of us who have specialist knowledge (and no bias because we don't sell things to people on the forum) often take a considerable time (a few hours) to research and pen careful and informative replies and are disinclined to repeat the exercise 10 days later because someone cannot be bothered to do a basic search. The result of this is that we don't respond to many of the repeat queries and thus that poster never reaps the _free_ benefit of the vast array of specialist knowledge available on the internet. He would be far better off doing a search and then coming back with more specific questions.

"do a search" ;) I have seen about 10 or so over the last few days

I answer what I can when I can, I don't answer if I can't add something of value

as it is a public forum, thanks for your input

Thought that was Mke's standard answer. Maybe referring them to the relevant post/s would be more helpful.

So you'd like me to keep a cross referenced index of my (frequent) answers to people's questions and then assess which of those responses might be most appropriate for the new question being asked and subsequently post details (would you like line numbers too?) of the threads the poster may wish to peruse.

Would it be better if I were to offer to pop round to their place and give them a free tutorial on the subject?

Why do you think it's so hard and challenging for people to do a search on the subject of their interest - are you suggesting they don't have the intelligence or that the search function on this site is so hard to use that most are incapable.

When you go to a library do you march up to the librarian and expect them to answer your question or do seek the reference section first?

Mike thanx for the offer, I would like to know the post where you incorrectly referenced Mildred in response to a post about snorkels, if you could consult your index of responses and provide date, time, reply AND post ID as well as a short summary of your response and colour of jocks you were wearing whilst responding that would help me to ascertain the length I need to make this piece of cornice I am measuring.

Thankyou and look forward to receiving this IMPORTANT piece of data.

Errr... Bonz... I think you'll find the post you mention regarding Mildred and the latex rubber snorkel was a private e-mail I sent directly to you. As you might imagine, I do not retain copies of such e-mails.

Mike Harding

PS. Do you think a size 7 would be OK?

mmmm I did consider this option but the plaster saw forbid me exploring it further, Size 7 was also consodered but the know on the end stripped its thread and the fish fell out.

I consulted the Book Of Armaments and theres no mildred related email in there so I defer to www.mildredthegoat.com.bleat

ask away I say, If people are sick of the same question, they won't answer. But thats not the issue....its the fact that people on here now feel the need that they HAVE too apologise for asking!!! Thats what upsets me a little

Hi Stefan,

I agree with you 100%. If it is a question that is asked a lot then all forum veteren's have to say is that yes I have this/done that/know why and if you would like to know more them send me a member message. Oh and BTW, if you do a search of the forum you should find a lot of info on the subject.

Honestly it doesn't take much to write something similar to the above and it holds not only the person writing it in high regard but makes people feel welcome to the forum.

If people feel that they are sick of seeing that question being asked then don't view the thread or respond.

My 2 cents

Regards
David

Hows it going guys ,

Initially , when I started posting on this forum I would have agreeed 100% with you guys.

It only take a couple of detailed replies about such things as spare wheel spacing , especially if you have posted a paragraph of details a couple of days before ! to get the ' you should do a search' monster out !

At least if I tell some one to search for something I dont do it in a rude way ,

You just have to remember that everyone has a first question, how silly was yours ?

Glenn.

I am fairly new to this forum and am guilty of saying sorry! I have found that while I always do a search first you often dont find the specific answer you want and sometimes it seems to depend on the specific words you type in to the search as to whether you find the correct info.
Its nice to know there are some out there that dont mind a few questions from a relative 'beginner'. Having said that I have found that those who answered my questions have been very helpful.
Cheers

Well said, Stefan. I agree. If people don't feel like answering the 10000th landcruiser v patrol, engel v waeco question, just ignore it. There's always newbies who will want to jump in with an answer.
Ask now, pray for forgiveness later!!

Actually the biggest problem here is the hijacking of threads, (which some may accuse me of doing here) & using them for private chat.
