I resently replaced the RD28t in my 1996 Nissan patrol.
The motor bought was an import and the import company converted it from a RD28 to an RD28t.
From the moment of start up it had a turbo whistle at high revs and man does it blow smoke.
I decided that from the large amount of white smoke that the injectors should be overhauled.
Having done this the smoke problem remained the same.
The engine is rattly has a slight miss and is noisy at the air filter.
I was wondering if it was possible to miss time this motor and still have it run.
The engine also breathes heavy.
I was almost under the impression that the timing is 180 out

If there are any suggestions that would be great as I have now spent $5000.00 and it couldn't run worse

Hi.
The white smoke shows that there is unburnt fuel or oil.
The oil could be coming from the seals in the turbo.
or
The engine has quite low compression.
I would be looking for a replacement engine under warranty

I agree with Ray. It sounds like a dog - don't continue to throw money at it. Take it back and demand a replacement. Surely it came with some sort of warranty?

Forgot to mention: I don't know for sure but it's possible the RD28 and RD28T are quite different apart from just the turbo bolted on the side. For example, static compression ratio, valve timing, cooling oil jets under the pistions etc. I'd not only demand a replacemnt under warranty but demand a genuine RD28T engine. Keep mentioning Comsumer Affairs Departments and the Trade Practices Act if they are not co-operative. $5000 for a dud engine is not acceptable.

Sorry to keep coming back in but this sort of thing really annoys me. Have you though of having your local RACx/NRMA etc. inspect the vehicle and report on the engine? (If you not a member join now!) Their tech departments should also have the resources to confirm any fundamental differences between an RD28 and RD28T. All good ammunition before fronting up back at the engine installers.

Thanks for the info it gave me more to consider.
The fact that the company that sold me the engine is 1000kms away is prompting me to do most of the troubleshooting.
Nissan Mackay were very unhelpful quoting we pay $700 for our manuals why would we give you any info.
I have checked the timing belt alignment and it all seams good.
I am now after the valve specs for a cold engine if anyone can help.
After that if it checks out good I will have to try and get this motor replaced under the three month warranty I got from Brisbane motor importers.

White smoke is more likely combustion that is too cool and forms condensation and gives it that white look.

Its most likely from an air leak or bad timing

Geachy

You state that they converted it to a Turbo.

Well, as mentiuoned by Ian above, you don't just strapp a turbo on and away it goes.

The fueling thing is the first thing I would go for as it cocts bugger all to have checked by someone who knows how to tune same.

Then the timing.

Over/under fueling with after market turbos (because they are additions) is one of the tricks to get right ASAP along with the timing.

I have been advised that:

1. Black smoke means unburnt fuel therefore there is an issue with the injectors

2. White smoke means an issue with the turbo, therefore my suggestion is that it could possibly be the turbo that has been bolted to the motor. Also you mentioned the high whislte - this would be the turbines in the turbo, so IMHO I think that oil is getting into the turbo or something along those lines. I think you really need to get an independant person to look at it and then take it back to the importer and have it looked at.

I have just fixed the turbo whistle (loose clamp on the air pipe).
After taking it for a run the smoke stopped while running and at idle slowly came back.
It still needs to be cranked to start even staight after tunring it off.
I checked the timing belt marks as per a diagram off the net and it all lines up.
Its worth mentioning that this all had to line up with BDC of the expansion stroke.
I was told that the turbo was checked out.
All i can presume is that at idle the oil seal in the turbo is leaking enough to generate the smoke.
That doesnt explain the cranking to restart the engine after shut down, it fires straight away when cold and the glow stage completed.
Then there is the slight miss at idle?
major miss while cold and smoking!

I may just have to make a 200kms drive to a fuel and timing specialist prior to sending the motor to Brisbane

I think the trip to diesel shop is a good idea. Get it looked at and if no good return it ASAP.

if you muck around with it (or pay someone else to) without their sayso you will not have a leg to stand regarding warranty, i fear.

rd28's have a plate on the side of the pump. these affect the timing and is quite a common problem that when they play up, cause the exact problems you are describing, ( lots of smoke and hard to start )
talk to a tech at your nissan dealer and they will steer you in the right direction with how to replace it. from memory it is around $50.

good luck.....donks
