i am getting a new hilux and was wondering what people think of the coopers. i have got bf mud's on my current hilux and have been happy.i know plenty of people with bf mud's but no one with the coopers so i don't know much about them. i wouldn't mind changing just to stir the pot with my mates, but only if there any good. cheers bob

Ditch em boht and put MTR's on.
I've had 2 sets and love em.
They are the best of both worlds

IMHO Coopers would be a backward step & it would be your mates that would be stirring you. A few other brands would be better than them both, the pattern depending on your driving needs. MTR's are arguably one of the best all round mud tyres with Procomp making some excellent tyres as well.

Mud is where the MTR suffers IMHO otherwise it's pretty good. The new BFG MT won't be out till around the end of the year if you want to wait for their latest and greatest.

Out of the 3 you are probably right cj, in mud the BFG would be better than the STT which is better than the MTR but only very slightly. In the durability, handling & braking the MTR would be better than both. Of course a mud tyre is of limited use if it chips easily & loses lugs in the rocks. If it is a real mud tyre one was after you wouldn't get any of them choosing instead something like a Swamper or Jungle Trekker. As I said the MTR is the best all round mud tyre you can choose that performs well on all surfaces making it ideal if you like challenging tracks but only want a single set of rubber.

I put a set of Cooper STT's on for our trip 2 years ago to the centre and home via the Painted Desert and the Oodnadatta track with the Jayco Outback in tow. I drive the Mav to work every day and have done some fairly exciting 4WDing up in the VIC high country and have not had a problem. They are not even half worn and we leave on our next jolly in 2 weeks. Unlike others, I have not a bad word to say about them. Cheers, Glenn

Mate, I have Cooper ST's with about 50 thou on them and still have ample tread. Traction is good in sand, mud, fast dirt roads and slower tracks and the black top, I rate them in that regard. The only blemish is the lugs on the tread edge are splitting and tearing off. I rotate every 10 thou, watch tyre pressure and adjust to all terrain. Yesterday travelled a rocky track and one tyre in particular has torn more so and now has exposed tread wires. I am p........sed off! Cape York trip in 8 weeks and I now have my doubts on the tyres. I'll be contacting Coopers! The more you know the better for your choice mate!

G'day Bob,

Used to run BFG mudders for a while, excellent tyres. With our new 4.2TDI patrol went to STT for a change, no dramas, excellent grip, wearing well. We live on the Nullarbor and unfortunately travelling out here cuts them up a bit with all the sharpies but only one puncture - a tech screw!!, easily fixed 40,000km and around half worn.
