About a year or so ago there was a discussion about
camping at Cania Gorge, I found a couple of threads in the archives but don't seem to be able to track down the one I'm after.
Someone gave some direction to a
free camping area nearby, I know about the caravan parks but prefer the free area's as we can have a fire there aswell, I also know about the free area on the hwy up the road from the turn off a little, that's not the one I'm after, the one that was mentioned was whilst travelling along the road towards the caravan
park you veer off to the left somewhere and find the area in there somewhere to the left of the
creek or gorge or something like that.
Not sure if these instructions are correct, hence this post hoping that someone will help with more accurate ones.
Or if anyone has directions to other
free camping areas nearby they would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Hi,
We just returned from there. Stayed at the Caravan
Park next to the National
Park entrance. You definitely can have a fire there (and we needed it too, one morning it was 1.5C)

Thanks for the info hl, but for 20 bucks for an unpowered
camp site for 2 people and 5 bucks extra for kids over 3 they won't be getting my dosh, that's a joke !!
Think I'll find somewhere else to go.
Cheers

Hi,
I understand your feelings and we use free sites whenever we can (we paid nearly 50 bucks once at
Hawker for 2 adults and 4 kids for an unpowered tent site!)
However, that place at Cania Gorge is clean and does have nice facilities......

Hi Pe,eza
Like the respondent below me, we choose to stay at the Cania Gorge Resort. It is a CP but most of the CP is wide big grassed sites where the wildlife come to you. It is dog friendly which is why we stay. Lots ob bush walks start at the
park limits. It has a great bush kitchen and amenities block and it is closest to
Monto if you need supplies. You can have fires. The CP provides braziers. Buy their wood or burn your own.
We don't stay at the Cania Gorge CP because it is a Bad4 us
park... the chain do not allow pets so they never see our dollar. Cania Gorge itself is wonerful.

Hi SKI'er,
Thanks for the info but if that is the same
park as hl is talking about near
the entrance to the national
park then see my response above :-)

Park Operators"

Hi Peeza,
I didn't think that the Cania Gorge Resort was $20 a night so I looked back at the Bankcard Bills. we had a powered site for 2 people for 3 days . You were right, with the Top Tourist oyaly card discount it cost us $64.80 for 3 days and 3 nights.
I don't know about the extra children charge. We think $21 a night is good value especially when considered against some of the other prices that have been asked of us.
I also looked up the price (NRMA Touring CP) book of the Big 4 operation which is up the
hill and much closer to the Lake/dam again. They were dearer still.
I hope this helped
