Hi all,
We bought a patrol the other week, its a nice 99 one with an impco gas conversion on it.
I did some research on tyres and found good and bad posts with all of the tyres I researched, so thus I thought I would ask patrol owners with a similiar model what they find to be good overall AT tyres.
Looking for AT tyres, although there will be little 4wding, there will be some at some stage.
My father in law has some open country TOYO tyres that hes had on for 60k so far and has plenty left on the tyre. I was considering these but I had also in mind pirelli, bridgestone, Ive heard bad stories about COOPER so I was gonna leave them out, especially with the high price.
So please offer me some suggestions, thanks! I am not looking for the best most expensive tyre in the world, just something that wears
well, looks good and not too expensive!
I was also wanting to ask about tyre numbers, what will fit on the patrol rims, I have alloys on them, they arent the standard patrol ones though, they look like the new patrol ones but without the square pieces out of the spokes if you know what I mean. They have tyres that are 265 70 16 on them at the moment, should i keep the exact numbers for the new tyres???
thanks a lot
Justin

G'day Justin,
You mention that there will be little 4wding, some of the budget Korean/chinese tyres represent value for money.I had some "cheap" korean tyres on my Patrol as I needed something for RWC, having said that they went everywhere that people with coopers and BFG'S went with out drama's and only $140 each.
I would stay with the same size as thats what your speedo is calibrated for, so no need to worry about speedo error ect. Plus that size is basically the cheapest in 16 inch.
Some Brands are
Nexen
Maxxis
Hercules
Not saying you should buy them, just saying I have used the Hercules, without drama. Some will say you get what you pay for and that is true to a certain extent, but I feel the prices for some of the name brands is 60% for the tyre and 40% for the brand name. Just my 2c worth
Cheers Stefan

You can go to 265-75-16 with little or no change to speedo reading. In fact
mine now reads true by the GPS after changing to this size. 98 GU.

Hi Justin
I run 4 set of tyres /
wheels here , mainly to optimize capability.
One set is the Opats , and they are now looking sick after 90,000 on my 4800.
Good tyre if your not looking for best 4wding.
Also I would go 265/75/16 as per Tony.

Hi justin71, We have a 99 Patrol, a couple of years ago we put on a set of BFGs 265/75 R16s to do the CSR we got over 110.000ks out of them and have just recently put on another set as we are taking off for the GCR & GRR next week. The two best of the previous set (they have still got wear in them) we are going to take as 'emergencies'.
Hope this helps
Cheers

As far as I'm aware there is only the one BFG A/T but someone else may know better. We paid $270 each for them from
Welshpool Tyre Servic in
Welshpool WA.
I don't know where you are but if you want more details email me.

Wow, nearly $1100 on tyres! Still, if you got 110k out of them,. whats that, 4 years worth? Thats not bad, I may look them up, its a matter of convincing the wife on paying so much!

It is a lot to
fork out in one hit but at the end of the day we definitely got our monies worth considering that the CSR was in the mix, we didn't get any punctures on the CSR but got one when we hit the butumen, (only 5klms), must have picked up a rock on the Tanami and going on the bitumen embedded it further into the tyre. A plug fixed it and it lasted as
well as the others.

whatever you do stay away from thos TOYO tyres. Prob a good choice for bitumen but complete disaster in even mild off road with soft sidewalls/soft construction overall and tread blocks that chip badly - unheard of in an AT tyre normally.
Mine lasted 5000k before I took them off they were genuinely hopeless

I've been running BFG AT's on my Patrol (98 GU) Since I bought it , 4 years ago.
I went up to 265/75/16 as its apparently a more common tyre then the 265/70/16 ??

Thanks for the post, whats the model name of the BFG's? And why change to the 75's, are they just more popular?

Its not just that the 265x75x16 is probably the most common size found on large 4wd wagons by a country mile but also the 265x70 is difficult to find in a decent construction ie 10 ply AT or MT rather than light construction HT. By far and away the 75 series gives you the widest choice of tyre with absaluly no dramas with fitting, legaity etc

Thanks for the info, so I would be better off making sure the tyres are 75?

Yep make sure they are 265x75x16 in a 10 ply rating. You can get cheaper 6 and 8 ply tyres but even if yu arnt going off road much I reckon its still worth it. Dont be talked into some tough MT tyres either from your description the ATs will serve you better with better road manners, noise and wear. And in 10 ply you will still have some confidence when taking them offroad and on dirt roads

Thanks Davoe
Re the 10 ply, is this displayed on the tyres like the dimensions are? Although I love the look of those mud tyres, they would be massive overkill for the wife picking up the kids from school, I have to laugh to myself when I see all the 4w4s with snorkels at the
parking lot.

nearly always the rating is on the side and also telling you how many tread and how many sidewall plies

Gday Justin,
When I bought my Patrol it had Bridgestone 694's. For an all-terrain I thought they were a pretty good tyre. I have just returned from a 12000km trip up to
Cobourg Peninsula and they handled
well and came back with no noticeable damage.
In mud they have a tendency to clog up a bit but what AT doesn't. All up I had them on for near 40000k's with no dramas and I would get them again if I wanted AT's. I have just put on some Maxxis mud terrains though for their extra offroad ability.
Good luck in your search.

Hi Earvin
I had the duelers which I think you are talking about on my old jeep, I dont think they lasted very long though, they looked nice and I liked the technology with the strong side walls etc. ALTHOUGH towards the end they were getting lots of punctures.

I was really surprised by them. Like I said I had no drama's but I did get rid of them with still a bit of tread left so perhaps the punctures may have come if I had held on to them a bit longer.

Hi Justin,
I can only call it as I see it. My new Coopers St's have just done 2,000k's and are six weeks old. Am I happy? Yes and No.
NO because I've just noticed three of them splitting about 2-3 cm from the rim. YES because the dealer told me they would be replaced under warranty.
Prior to buying the tyres I did my research and read both the good and bad press on my short list of BFG's AT and Coopers ST tyres. I managed to speak to people that had experienced problems with both brands. But on the whole there are a lot of happy consumers using both.
After the tyres are replaced, will I have confidence in the product knowing I plan to do 6,000ks next month, towing a camper trailer, with some of it in remote areas? NO.
Will I buy Coopers ST's again? That will depend on how they fair on my forthcoming trip but at the moment I'm just a wee bit uncomfortable.

Monkey,
I had similar problems with my ST's a couple of years ago, as
well as ripped off lugs. They were replaced under warranty and those tyres faired a little better but I will not go back to Coopers. I just have no faith in them.
Hopefully you get a good run out of this set.

Thanks for the input guys, I researched coopers and found many posts like yours. They looked cool to me and I was thinking of them some time ago but I have just heard too many bad stories so definitely no for me, especially for the price.
This
forum is so active its hard to find your own threads hey )
