Anyone tell me if i should be using LSD oil for my rig, 60 series with ARB diff locks
Need to do some maintenance pre trip and I heard that LSD oil would be better for locking diffs than standard.

My understanding was that you should use the same oil as you did in the standard diff.

Check with the diff lock manufacturer.

I have an ARB locker in as well but the diff is noisy as the Ring gear is worn. Is it OK to use the Nulon diff treatment or Redline diff oils? Which one is better given that the Nulon stuff is heaps cheaper then Redline which is tonnes cheaper then replacing the R/P gears?

Will it affect the seals in the locker?

LSD oil like Castrol LSX-90 is better than standard 80W/90 diff oil for 2 reasons.
1. the oil is a true SAE 90 viscosity at 100 Celsius, and
2. it is GL-6 extreme pressure anti wear level whereas the standard is GL-5.
The difference here is that GL-6 has a much greater level of extreme pressure shock wear protection, in addition to bearing wear protection.

The viscosity difference [per point 1.] also helps with long term gear tooth wear protection.
The ARB seals are made of Viton, a synthetic rubber that is resistant to mineral gear oils and their additives.

Hi Wayne,

My Air Locker Service guide says for normal use..
Shell Diff Oil (SAE 90)
Mobil Mobilube GX90
The ARB staff told me you can also use Penrite Limslip 85w/140. They actually wrote this in the service guide lubricant section of my manuel. Hope it helps.

Regards, Monkey.

Wayne I just had a diff locker fitted last week and the ARB guy (Russel - Rockhampton) told me not to use LSD oil anymore because manufacturers are putting in additives and skimping on the quality, he said to make sure I use a 85w140 spec oil for our higher temps.

Cheers
