I will be heading off in a few days time for a much researched and planned trip to Arnhem Land ...Gove...Nhulunbuy. Many thanks to Chris at Walkabout Lodge Nhulunbuy for helping to excite me with some first hand photos and videos of his camping trips in that area. Is anyone else touring that area in early August?
I am hoping to post a full Oziexplorer trip log of the trip onto this site on my return...Haven't ever done this before but it will keep my brain busy at night over the campfire continuing to understand how to use Ozie.
Regards
Graham

Have a great trip Graham, I'm sure you will.

I've been thinking, for a while, it's about time I headed up in that direction again - don't think I can make it before the next Wet though...?

Hi Graham,

We lived there for just over 2 years, and no matter what people tell you, they cannot do justice to the place.

Would have changed little since we left, still have very good friends up there that will never leave.

If you are into fishing, a tinnie is a must.

You will enjoy the place, chat to the locals and find out the best places to visit.

4wd and camping paradise.

Cheers
Michael

Chris at Walkabout Lodge had better watch out if he is going to give out all of "our" secret fishing and camping spots around Nhulunbuy.....
If i get to a "secret" camping spot and 20 people are already there "LOOKOUT PICSABA"......

Tongue and Cheek for your info Graham K (NSW)....
Just thought i would tell you that so you didnt abuse me..

Camping on Cape Arnhem is a must. Only 10 cars per day allowed onto this coastal area. We were lucky enough to get a permit for 4 days.

Hi Navigator 1,
we are going to NT in September and hope to get to Arnham land. Haven't applied for permit yet. Any advice. Intend to download permit tomorrow. Is there any particular thing to be said on form to get permit approved or is it a fairly straightforward thing. I'd be grateful for any advice.....like.....your recommendation of camping / fishing spots ......
Thanks in advance
cheers
Lynda

Hi Graham & Lynda
Hope you both have a wonderful trip.
Unfortunately I have not been able to find my collection of information on Arnhem Land but from memory......
Organisation of permits was easy. We did both by phone.
Permit 1 from the Northern Land Coucil. at Katherine...
Allows you to transit the Central Arnham Road, 750km, with one over night stop. A map is supplied indicating those places in which you can camp. If you don't like the spots, as we didn't, camp in a gravel pit. You will find a small track off the main road approx every 10km. This puts you out of sight of the main road.
This permit will only be granted if you can supply the name of the motel, lodge or or address/name of home at which you have booked your first nights accommodation.

Permit 2...
Contact Dhimurru Land Management in Nhulunbuy for....
Town Permit ....Forgotten the cost but around $12pp for ?? days. This allows you to move around the town area and camp in several places such as
Rainbow Cliffs. This is a good spot to camp close to town if you are doing a mine tour early in the morning.
Macassan Beach. Most of the town workers and families camp here on days off. Very pleasant and right on the coast.
While in town don't forget ..
The Yacht Club ...Excellent views to west and a good meal.
Roy Marika Lookout

Permit 3,4 etc
Organise with Dhimurru Land Management in Nhulunbuy for ...
SPECIAL PERMITS for camping areas outside to town zone...eg
Cape Arnham...absolutely beautiful. White sand for about 30km. Only 10 cars per day in the area. Our permit was for 4 days. NO TRAILERS ALLOWED.
Memorial Park...
This area is away from the coast but on a river that flows over the rocks and down into a big pool area. You can relax in the big holes in the rocks with the water flowing gently around you. If travelling alone, you will have the area to yourself. If in a group, only 4 cars allowed.
The are other areas too

This information is 3 years old but may help. We dont fish so cant recommend fishing areas.

Enjoy your holiday.....
