Hi all,
I have an 03 GU 4.2l ute, which has a 3 inch mandrell exhaust and has had the boost increased to about 12 psi. I notice it now blows alot of black smoke- mainly under load/acceleration. I was going to have it looked at until a mate recently had the same work done to his GU (4.2l, 3 inch exhaust and higher boost) and his is doing exactly the same. Is this a problem or is it normal for the patrol's?
regards
Brett

Brett,
No this is not common. I have 4.2 iTD wagon, GU3, with 3" dump & exhaust, with stage 2 tubo upgrade, and boost running 14psi, and fuel wound right in, and not an ounce of smoke my man.
I would check your injectors perhaps.
What egt's are you getting, maybe the pump is too high?

yeah ok. exhaust temp will reach 450. I have seen some smokey Gu's and was told it is normal??
Maybe a good idea to have it checked out.
Cheers

Wayne-o,
What did stage 2 turbo upgrade involve?
Cheers Dave....

dave,
oversizing of both compressor and turbine, as
well as larger and more efficient
wheels. As
well adjustable wastegate actuator, with boost set to 14psi.
stage one is only the compressor wheel oversized.
I compared the new tubo to the old one, and there is a definate difference in size, Inner diameter, and the turbine
wheels have more blades.
Oh, and with the 3" exhaust upgrade, goes like a shower of the preverbial!!!
cheers
Wayne-o

Thanks Wayne-o,
I'll have to investigate a bit more about it over here on the Eastern side,
