Mike
use 2 Garmins and have both set on true , I guess if you not going to visit Santa it won't make much difference between Magnetic and True

I should have also added that if your using it alongside paper maps , have a look at the map to see what heading they use

Hey Doug all the maps I have seen reference True North with the grids and the better ones show you the MN gradient

For most people they will never use this setting unless they are requiring the bearing with reference to Magnetic North.
Stick with either True North (and/or
Grid North on some GPS's).
Almost all maps (except for some specialised maps eg Orienteering) will use
Grid North which is near enough to True North in most cases to ignore the slight difference (called
grid convergence).
Mils is a military bearing system where 6400 mils = 360 degrees.
Changing this setting will not affect your position displayed, and will not effect a GOTO or equivalent (the arrow will still point you to the location). It will only ever effect your navigation IF given a bearing to follow with an alternative reference point or you transfer magnetic bearings to/fro a map and/or compass. Sticking with True/
Grid North will eliminate this GPS/map issue.
Hope this helps
Andrew
