G'day all,
I have come across an offer that seems to be to good to be true,
that is an 03 TD 100 Series Cruiser manual,
What should I be checking mechanically before I spend the dollars. It has 80 000km on the clock.
Your opinions would be greatly appreciated
Cheers Kev

Kev,
I'm no expert so this info is only a guide - I'd be checking for any play in the tail/drive shafts, more so in the front as my '04 TD GXL Manual did suffer from a destroyed pinion shaft bearing. Also check for excessive backlash when accelerating/coasting/accelerating.
Also a check of the lower arms on the front
suspension. Make sure there are no cracks where the welds finish. You can see which ones they are as the weld doesn't appear to go to the edge of the join. There was a 'quasi' recall on this - if they were found to be fatigued/cracked Toyota would replace them case-by-case.
The last recall I'm aware of was for a possible front disc rotor problem. If the recall was done on this one it should have a sticker inside the drivers door on the A pillar. It was about 5 mths ago.
No doubt others will have more info for you.
Good to see you're not getting a 3.0 Ni$$an.... :-)

Kev,
Just be very careful it hasn't came out of the auctions after the floods in NSW.
There was a warning put out in the SA newspapers warning of cheap vehicles
coming on the market over here from them areas.
Now the Gippsland area in Vic. has also had floods, and no doubt some more unfortunate people will have had cars affected by
water that they will dispose of.
I would be very careful and do my homework on the history of any vehicle I purchased secondhand at the moment, as the last thing you want is one that done
a big swim. Regards Nick.

Nick,
Thanks for the heads up,
But from the pics it doesn't look effected, that is the upholstery doesn't look stained etc.
But I'll definitely be lifting the carpets on the floor.
Cheers Kev

Good point Nick,
We had a 4.2 TD Patrol at work during the floods here - ended up with 100mm of
water throughout. Dried it off best we could but then headed to
Loch Sport driving through minor flood waters - problem is it was salt
water. It went to the auctions last week...

03 Factory turbo for under $20k, with 80k on clock???? Flogged out aftermarket turbo poverty pack would be around those dollars I'd have thought.
Considering they seem to sell for more than twice that amount I'd say something is suss.....best give me the details so I can ceck it out ;-)

Yeah,
The bloke is being a little pushy now, wants a deal without me viewing it etc. He reckons he is in London buying a house so he can move over there. Still waiting for all the details so that I can REVs check it at least.
May have to put it in the to hard basket.

As soon as he becomes pushy, it is time to walk away. You'd have to smell a rat there somewhere.

Kev,
A REVS check will not detect a rebirthed car as the vehicle data on such cars is genuine, and usually ex insurance write-offs, so that option can leave you out of pocket when it is repossessed.
I would get the VIN and some of the vehicle part numbers and check these with Toyota to see if the VIN aligns with the part number issue dates and break points. Even then you can be caught out but it is a better check than REVS for catching rebirths.
If it is too good to be true then it probably is!!!
Good luck

It's at North Rocks, and seeing as though I'm not at work I have all the time in the world.
My neighbour is a diesel mechanic and he's going to check it out with me, just got to organise it now.

Well it was to go to be true,
Someone has just bought it sight unseen except for the pics that were on the internet.
It was a 2003 model TD Manual 100 Series for $8 500.00
He reckoned that he was in London buying a house and needed the money for the deposit and other expenses.
Thanks for the replies as I'll use them for future reference.
Cheers Kev

And let me guess, he would have wanted you to wire him the money overseas.
$8.5K for a 03 100 series. Converts to about 3600 UK pounds. Let me tell you, this aint much money to buy a house in London. Doesn't get you much at all in London, let alone Australia.
This bloke is definitely FOS and you should count yourself lucky you didn't fall for it.
Plenty of scams going around with pretend owners selling vehicles they don't even own.
