Off to Mt Augustus (W.A.) next month with off road van, has anyone stayed at the caravan park there or cobra station, and which one do you recommend?.....ALSO if I go via the Meektharra road through the "Burringurrah" aboriginal community will I require a permit.

Mt Augustus Park is fine. No issues there unless it's under water. Check the WA DIA site for permit info. I don't think you do require one but their website is very user friendly these days and will let you know. You can use it to apply and have a permit emailed back pretty quickly.

G'day Mike. No permit required for the "Resort" nice hot showers friendly frogs and the locals provide some "entertainment". Heard that Cobra's been closed for camping though but can't confirm. Nice spot and the Galahs will entertain you if nothing else does.

Hi Mike
Look for red-tail black cockatoos on the way from Meekatharra around Errabiddy Station. With bit of luck, you will have also great photos.
Mt. Augustus changes colours as Uluru, so look from distance. We have pictures black (late afternoon); red (very early morning) and violet (midday).
Very impressive for virtually unknown and especially biggest single rock in the world.
You will love the place, we did..............

I have found the CP at Mt Augustus a necessary evil. Not the best, but worth it to spent a couple of days on the walk trails.

Went to Mt Augustus 2 years ago.
Agree that the 'resort' is a necessary evil - adequate.
Cobra seemed to be withdrawing from tourism stuff, and supplying fuel - you'd need to check with them if you're keen to stay there, I think. Also a reasonable hike back to the MT.
I towed a standard van via Murchison and across to Carnarvon, so I doubt the roads will cause you problems unless there's flooding.
I was much more impressed by the Kennedy Ranges tho - highly recommend you check em while you're nearby.
Cheers

Hi Mike,
We stayed at Mt Augustus in 2005, back then fuel was around $1.80 at the resort, so I drove down to Burringurrah to fill up - much cheaper, around $1.50. They also had a good range of fresh food etc. in the store. We didn't need a permit to go to Burringurrah.
