if you are using outlook or outlook express (or similar) then they actually download the email to the computer that reads it and remove it from the ISP host.

best would be to use a webmail type viewer and leave the email on the host until you no longer need it

1 way to do it is at work browse your emails through something like webmail, this doesn't remove the mail from the server, alternatively there may be the option in your regular mail program to leave a copy of the email on the server.
yet another option could be to set up a separate email address at home and forward stuff from work to home, then on your home computer you may be able to set the reply address as the origional address so emails are received normally.
or you could use a laptop.......

Yes, there is. Whatever email program you're using, it can be configured to leave the email on the POP server.

So, if you want to definitely be able to download email to both computers, then both computers would need to be configured to leave the email on the POP server.

I just looked at the Windows mail program that comes with Vista and it has the option:

Leave a copy of messages on server, that can be checked. And, if that box is checked, then under that is another option that has:

Remove from server after x days, where you specify the number of days. So, if you're checking email on both computers each day or fairly regularly, then you could set this value to 5 days for example.

Then, this would allow email to be downloaded onto one computer but remain on the POP server for another 5 days. In the meantime, it would be downloaded by the other computer.

I agree I do the same,
Outlook settings are, Tools, email acc, Veiw or change exsisting email acc, Click Next, Then click change, More settings, Advanced tab, Check leave a copy on server, then I put in the next box remove after 5 days. Ok , finish & your all done, you'll have to do to both computers.
Have fun.

Both of these replies are right on the money, but depending on the program you are using for e-mail, an alternative could be for one to collect the emails and automatically forward them to an alternate email address - which you could set up on the other PC. Most ISP's allow you to have more than one email address.

Either method will have the desired result.

Cheers,

decide on which system you want to view and delete then set the other systems email program to "Leave mail on server". emails will not be deleted unti you download on the other system .. or you set both to leave on server and delete them manually .. matter of taste and number of emails ...
both Thunderbird and Outlook Express have such options ... if you use Eudora or other email programs they also should have such a setting but I won't know for sure

have fun

Hi Nick

everyone has a different idea and all will work - this is my take on the problem

have outlook on three computers

one is master (desktop) and others are slaves - so to speak

the master is set to remove mail from server on delete and the slaves to leave - this fixed the problem for me - it may work for you.

Hope this helps

Rather than using POP protocol you could use IMAP - by default then, all email will remain on the server. The email client (be it Outlook, Thunderbird or even a webmail client) will just read the list of mail on the server. To remove a message, you have to hit delete in one of the clients - then it will be removed from all of them.

I have used this email method for years as I have the same email account on two machines at home, my PDA as well as webmail access. The only downside is that it uses a lot of room on the server, and it may not be supported by all ISPs.
