Good Morning everyone,

My son has just purchased his 1st vehicle and not being mechanically minded I have a question.
Vehicle purchased is a 2003 Hilux Diesel with 107K on the clock. It has been serviced regularly until sold or traded sometime in the 90ks. I cannot find any where where the timing belt has been changed. Checked log books and no stickers in the engine compartment.
My question is - Is there any way I can find out if its been changed at 100K? Inspection of the belt?

Cheers

Howard.

Howard - being cynical I could guarantee it has not been changed.

But in any case I'd change it to be sure. The cost of a broken timing belt on a diesel(ie new engine block) far outweighs the cost of the new belt.

Dono about Hilux, but have replaced timing belt myself in diesel 80 LC I can say that sometimes it is incredibly difficult to tell how old is it. Mine definitely been done 100K ago, but when I withdraw it I could not find noticeable wear at all. To me it looks like 10-20K as most. I was so impressed by Toyota belt quality, that got Toyota genuine one instead of $20 cheaper Burson. My advise would be – replace it. Main cost going to take it out and put it back (need to do it for inspection anyway) and cost of belt itself is relatively cheap insurance for your engine.

Hi Howard,
My 1999 Hilux requires belt changes at 150,000k. I would think that the 2003 model is the same. When I changed mine at 150,000 it still looked in excellent condition.

Hey howard,
The timing belt light should illuminate when it is required.
My hilux was also every 150k.
Cheers

Yeah I'm pretty sure the 1kz-te and 5L were both 150k change intervals.
