American Tow balls

My son has just purchased a camper van that was made by Palamino in the US.
The coupling is a strange one that I have not seen before and is not a very good fit on a 50mm tow ball. I realise that the Yanks are so far behind the rest of the world that they are still using imperial measurements but before buying a 2" tow ball I was hoping that someone out there would know if a 2" ball is standard in the US or what do they use?
Thank you

Apart from checking and matching the tow ball to the coupling, I would also be thouroughly (thoroughly) checking any electrical wiring, fittings, gas and appliances, brakes and anything else that might compromise safety. Thank goodness for ADRs etc that require comercially imported equipment such as yours comply with OUR standards.

they are not behind as a matter of fact as far as couplings go
way better concept than this rubbish here ... couplings that is ..
2" is standard in US but illegal here ...

if you run into a smart copper you will get a yellow sticker .. 2" balls
and couplings are illegal ... ther are trailers out there with 2" couplings
and some inspec tion stations don't bother but following Australian standards
it's 50mm and not 2" ..

I have converted my boat trailer to an Australian coupling and hate it but
what can you do ...

have fun

forgot to add that Palomino is a brand not a manufacturer as far as I know.
The manufacturer of Palomino caravans, slide-ons and 5th-wheelers is Forest River,
I think they are in Michigan..

have fun

Oh yeh, I can just see a police officer asking you to unhitch and getting out his towball measuring tool.....

Most wouldn't even know.

Be very careful I use to bring boats in from the USA & all the trailers had to have NEW couplings, axles & brakes as they were too light for Australian Standards.
You will find some of the cheap 50mm towballs sold in Australia do not meet the Australian standard either

How come none of the MacGregor Yachts have to change their trailer couplings?

Hi Ray, I have seen an American camper that a fella in Penrith is Importing and the hitch is like a gal sort of colour and it wraps around the single drawbar and what he does is get a bloke to weld a flat ( 10 mm x 100mm x 200mm ?) just guessing the sizes mate and then puts a standard coupling on worth about $25 so you might want to consider this as it at least wont give you any RTA hassles .

cheers J.B.

The post doesn't say but we are all assuming the camper is actually in Australia.

Assuming it is then surely if it is new the seller would have to sell it with australian compliance.

Go back to the seller and ask them

Actually, there are various size tow balls in the US. 1-7/8 inch (rare these days), 2'' (which is the most common), and 2-5/16'' (mostly found on large trailers with two or three axles and goosenecks) and then of course the fifth-wheel hitch. Yes, goosneck's use regular tow balls and they are different to fifth-wheel couplings. I believe the metric standard for massive trailers is 70mm, as 50mm is only good for up to 3500kg.

I have a 1 7/8" towball cause it fits the 1 7/8" hitch on the trailer , almost an antique but still does the job.

CAMEC stock towballs in imperial sizes. How can they do that if it's illegal?

I don't believe it's illegal, it is not unsafe if you use the correct towballs for the right hitches. There's one thing that the government can't be too tough on, is trailers. I see lots of unraodworthy crap being dragged behind cars, it's not funny. The non-metric fitting would be the last thing to worry about.

2 inches = 50.8mm. Is there such a tight tolerance that 0.8 mm makes a 2 inch tow ball illegal?? Just curious. Regards G.T.
