seen a 99 lux with factory turbo, has 270 000kms. obviously its cheaper than the lower milage ones. when will the engine need a rebuild? it does have a good service history - the gearbox has already been overhauled. thanks for your advice.

Hi Sam

I'm not sure they had factory turbo hiluxes till about 2001 - and then it was on the SR5.

You'd think by putting a turbo on a 3L would be the same as the factory doing it, but it's not - There are lots of little differences between a factory turbo and aftermarket

As for the mileage, it's high, but depends on how its been driven and looked after.
I'd spend the extra and get a lower mileage one.

Obviously with more miles there is going to be a lot more wear on the whole car.

Pay now or pay later - its up to you

Goodluck, Will

I had a late 99 SR5 turbo Hilux. My daughter has it now. It has the 1KZ-TE motor. It has a three plug ECU. I now have an 04 turbo Hilux. Same except it has electronic throttle, four plug ECU.
My daughters Hilux has just turned over 220,000km. No sign of any problems. The only thing replaced was pitman arm. Suspension wore out as well. I bought it at 45,000km.

Yeah those are essentially the same as my 95 surf (front end anyway). Mines nearly done 200,000kms with the 1kz-te. I just replaced a wheel bearing, steering idler arm and a CV boot. Total cost, $10 for the boot, $110 for the idler and $45 for the wheel bearing kit. Drives like new again. Mine has a leaky rear main seal that will cost $550 to replace and needs a new radiator but it's also 12 years old, so meh. They are a good donk, but are prone to head problems if they have not run good coolant (like the Toyota Genuine stuff) and or have been run hot at any time. If it's been well maintained and had 5k oil changes then it's prob got some good life left in it. A compression test and a test on the head (not sure how you do that on diesels) would be my first port of call. If that's ok, everything else you can do pretty easily and cheaply. Timming belt should have been changed at 150k and suspension ect is not too bad to do on them. All the other things that wear like drive betls and hoses are a peice of bleep to change yourself.

FYI The 3L motor was the 2.8L old school. The 5L and 5LE's were the 3.0L non-turbos and the 1kz-te was the factory turbo 3.0L.
