looking to get some synthetic winch rope but wondering how you fix it to the winch drum. with the steel cable it has an eyelet crimped on the end with a screw going through it into the winch drum.

Also any ideas on where the cheapest place to source the new hawse style fairlead required.

oops forgot to add where do you get the outer sheath. I have found a cable at reasonable pricing but they don't have the outer sheath

OkOffroad also do winch rope guards which I think is what you are after - about USD20 for 10' + shipping I think.

Just sent you an email with the stuff I got from

www.okoffroad.com/

Note it has the sheath and the thimble for attaching to the drum.

Cheers

G'day Shawn,
All I sent him was a piccy I copied and pasted from the okoffroad website. If you click on the link shown above or here.... www.okoffroad.com then you should be able to see the piccy of the rope with the thimble and the sheath etc.

The off-set aluminium hawse I got was a little bit too wide at it's extremities and I had to cut off about 5mm from each end to make it fit the Patrol's bar.

Cheers

Roachie

G'day Roachie,

Crazie and I did the same to the hawse when fitting it to my Patrol - in the end we didn't need to though as I ended up spacing it out of the fairlead cradle with some aluminium blocks. Reason I did this was the rope would contact the edges of the cradle with the hawse recessed right back on a side pull. Not surprising really as the hawse is pretty thin compared to a fairlead. I just spaced it out so that it sits at the front of the cradle and bought some longer bolts from Coventry Fastners.

Hi David,

I use Amsteel Blue winch rope and an aluminium hawse fairlead that I purchased from OkOffroad in the US. The rope comes with a thimble (eyelet) on one end and is swathed with a hook receiver on the other end - also has a 5 meter protective sheath. Rope was 30 mtrs. Check out www.okoffroad.com for the gear - excellent prices, great service - and lets face it, damn cheap now with the AUD pushing 89 cents.

Just be careful with the hawse - make sure you get one with offset mounting holes to ensure the rope is centred. Low mount winches with the feet forward do not sit dead centre in the bar - not an issue with a fairlead, but is an issue with rope if it contacts the bottom of the cradle. OkOffroad can supply info re: this.

Dave

I use exactly the same from the same place.

I did however get the 3/8 inch cable Approx. 10.5mm I think it is.

It comes with a thimble spliced in, protective sheath, attaching lug to drum and if you are real smart you get one of their aluminium hawse which has the offset to match the ARB winch bars.

Their Ali Hawse are dirt cheap and it gets included in the same freight costs.

AND Mr Moggs

I don't remember seeing you at Warraweena., however that doesn't mean you weren't there.

G'day Lucy, Nah, didn't make Warawenna - was at Arkaroola that weekend and couldn't convince Natalie of the merits of making the trip down for the day. We were however there on the Tuesday before - went in to have a look at the old mine just a few kms inside the gate. I hear you had quite the adventure! Hopefully we can make the next one. Hope all is well.
