AGM BATTERIES

I have read and been told by battery distributors that AGM batteries can be installed on their side or even upside down.

I spoke to another battery sales man today and he informed me that it`s OK to have AGM batteries on their side when used in a stationary position, but not in caravans or any thing moving.

He stated that they will work OK, but the life of the battery will be shortened as the thumping from constant movement will wreck the cells.

Has anyone been told this regarding AGM batteries?

Hi Phil

Extract from Bosch Batteries.

The glass-fiber fleeces are fitted between the lead plates and almost completely absorb the electrolyte. It is therefore unable to run out because the battery is almost completely dry on the inside. For this reason, the AGM Deep Cycle battery can even be installed on its side and in inaccessible positions without any danger. The special design of the battery also makes it insensitive to mechanical stress, such as bumps, vibrations, or intensive variations such as those experienced during a heavy swell or when traveling through difficult terrain.

Read the whole story here. Bosch AGM

Regards

Derek.

No they should not be mounted upside down. They are VRLA batteries and the pressure relief valve will be blocked with components boiled out of the battery if it is mall-treated (like being overcharged.) when this happens the internal pressure will build up to a point of possible catastrophic possibilities.

It may be me? But my way of thinking is, if there is room to install them facing up, why would you put them upside down?

Perhaps if they're made in the northern hemisphere, you may need to install them upside down here in Oz. Just a theory...

That's right, the electrolyte flows anti clockwise.
