Gday,
I am looking to build a camper trailer. I'm looking at an on road 6x4. Has anyone built one?
Any comments, stories or tips?
Cheers

Can't help you but I'm in the same boat... errr... trailer :)
The commercial ones are too large, I want a small light trailer which will support one (sometimes two) people. I noticed someone selling a "how to make your own CT" disk on E-bay the other day - only a few $ so probably worth buying.

Mike, you can adapt the ebay roof top tents to fit a relatively small trailer.

If just using the internal for storage make sure that the storage containers that you intend to use fit snuggly to prevent excess movement. Have a sturdy edge strip for the tent base to fix to.
Don't under sell yourself with building an onroad version spend the dollars now and put offroad
suspension and a heavy duty axle under it with brakes as it will be a PITA to do it later.
Also consider if you are going to have a
water tank/ jerry can holders/ gas bottle holders and try to get them positioned for optimum balance on the trailer.
Just my thoughts, have fun
Cheers Kev

That's why I started out with an 8x5 off road trailer to suit a camper top later :))

a lot of suppliers sell tops only
one has to make sure the height of the trailer at the right height when the canvas flips over
there are some who sell trailer kits as
well
but i do agree with a comment above ..make it tough!!! and save the re-work later on

With the help of the old man we worked up a 7x5 off road trailer to take a
camp box, it was horrid to tow so Tru-Blu did a custom top for me, custom because the trailer has a 2 inch lift.
it now has 120 litres of
water storage, electric pump, battery and 5x12v outlets a slide out kitchen, stone guard and side doors.
Next is some better storage boxes, 6 jerry holders, electric blanket and a re-wire
1 tip, use a set square it can save a lot of headaches!!!

That is a very nice setup and I love the
suspension. Did you built the
suspension or buy the arms? If so where do you get systems like that?
cheers

Stuart,
Following the progress of the trailer has been more addictive than a soapy. Time for an update mate.

Tadge,
I built an off road trailer using the web site in Richard Kovacs message. That plus a bit of common sense went a long way. There are plently of companies around the place who will sell you trailer parts (panels,
suspension, couplings, etc).
Just ensure that you chassis is straight and that you dont pour too much heat into your frame work so that it warps. Also spend some time getting your
suspension squared up in relation to the frame and the hitch.
Have fun.
