How far do you have to drive to get to the outback from Brisbane…..? We are looking at doing a quick weekend gateway and I am really keen to go out west. We have done nearly all the trips in the dirty weekends away but want something more something further away something a little more challenging. I am willing to drive about 5 hours west….is there anything out there that could be worth looking at? I know I am being very vague so sorry about that. We just need to get away from the big smoke for a night.

Thanks

5 hrs west? All pretty flat country out that way mate. Best I could suggest is down around the border parks near Stanthorpe, Girraween etc. Bit bloody chilly this time of year but....!

Did Stanthorpe and the Sundown National park area about 2-3 months ago and it was nice. The cold will be fine with a nice fire and couple brews :)

Thought you were already out in the sticks if you lived in Brissy !! Sorry, couldn't miss the opportunity, so will get back in my kennel for now. Hope you find a great place for your weekend getaway. Best wishes, Barry

They are not sticks you see, but State of Origin trophies :)

Hi Troll 81.
Why dont you try the Nindigully pub, 44k south of St. George. It is on the banks of the Moonie River & a great bush camp spot.If required, accomodation & meals are available at the hotel & also public facilities are available free of charge at the hotel.
We spent our first night there recently on our corner country trip.
A great spot.
Regards.
Vince

St. George is also the inland fishing capital as well.

Just watch out for the free beer tomorrow at Nindigully pub, there was also free beer yesterday :))

Cheers Kev

If not in a rush The Pig races are on in November again

The Nindigully Pig Races will be held on the 24th of November 2007 starting at 5.00pm at the Nindigully Pub. The Pig Races are a yearly event with all money raised going towards the Royal Flying Doctors Service, there will be a gate fee on entry. The day will include 3 – 4 country music acts performing from 8.00pm. Food will be available on the day with a fireworks spectacular in the evening.

CLC50 went last year and had a great time.

Cheers Kev

You could go to the little town of Mitchell where they have artesian spa baths and then to Mt Moffatt NP which is part of the Carnarvon National Parks. Mitchell has good camping, good pubs for a meal. Mt Moffatt has good camping areas too and is an interesting spot with fantastic views and unusual rock formations.

Best meal in Mitchell is at the motel. The pubs were full of young females wearing steel capped army boots LOL
But yes, a nice little stopover.

Hi Troll - A good 4 dayer is Fort Grey in the Sturt Desert just before Camerons corner. Brilliant park - go via Thargominda, then take the Booloo downs road through Old Tickalara and take the Fortville gate just before Camerons Corner.

For closer to home - here are 5 suggestions:

Have you been to 'Gordons Country' at Goomburra?
Just go up Cunninghams Gap, turn left at the Driver Reviver, then follow the signs.
There are 4 camping options there. State forest; a small van park on 8 acres with power etc; a 4wd park, and then 4000 acres of Gordon country (camp anywhere).

Just out of St George there is Rosehill Aviary - worlds largest collection of Aust Parrots. Aviaries are not all that flash, but you can camp free beside the artesian bore just up the road, provided you visit the parrots.
There is a free campspot at Bollon beside the Wallum creek - see Camps 3.
Koalas in the trees and fish in the creek.
So - drive to the bore friday night; check out the parrots Sat morn; drive to Bollon for Sat night (only about 100klms from the Parrots), then home Sunday.

Drive to Dalby, then take the Moonie Highway for 20 klms, then turn left to Lake Broadwater Conservation Park. A quiet park, good toilets and large open shelter; Short walks around the 'lake' (very shallow and only fills if creek floods).

One of my favourites is here: www.clarenceriver.com/
Better in warmer climes - keep this one till Oct.

Have you been to Yates Crossing? Drive to Tabulam on the Bruxner highway, then take either of 2 roads south to what used to be the 'town' of Alice. Yates is where the road crosses the river.
